As the Giants hold the no. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, many arguments have been made about who the team should select.
A franchise quarterback, such as Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen? Someone to help the offensive line? What about Penn State star RB Saquon Barkley? Well, Barkley himself could already imagine how electric lining up with the likes of Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram would be.
"That would be special," Barkley told Steve Serby of NY Post. "I admire Odell's game. He's a walking highlight. Everyone knows the one-handed plays, but he can catch a slant and take it 80 yards. Not only Odell, [Sterling] Shepard, the tight end [Evan Engram], they're all special, they're all talented. If I was fortunate enough to get drafted to a team like the Giants, I feel like if I was able to have the success that I had in college, I feel like that would be a good fit."
Barkley mentions Eli Manning, but also deployed diplomacy, saying he'd be a good fit anywhere, without getting too carried away talking only about the Giants.
"But there, you add a running game, it's like, what can you do on the defensive side of the ball? You have a veteran, established quarterback, Eli Manning, who's proven himself, won two Super Bowls, that you know the guy's gonna get the job done. It would be special to learn from guys like him and Odell. Obviously, any team that drafts me, I feel like that's a good fit."
When asked why playing in New York would be so appealing to him, Barkley needed few words.
"New York, New York. It's known all through the world," Barkley said. "I wasn't raised there, but I was born there [Bronx]. It would kind of be like going home. It's also not that far from my actual home [Coplay, Pa.]."
In his junior season at Penn State, Barkley rushed for 1,271 yards and 18 touchdowns while winning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year for the second time. He added another 632 receiving yards on 54 catches with three touchdowns. He returned two kicks for touchdowns and even threw a passing touchdown. His 3,843 career rushing yards at Penn State fall just 90 yards shy of breaking the school's career rushing record, held by Evan Royster.
Barkley will find out his future on April 26, when the first round of the NFL Draft commences.
