If the Giants and Jets were to advance to the AFC and NFC championship game, which is scheduled to be played on the same day, and were the higher seeded team among their opponents, it would be next to impossible to give both teams access to Giants Stadium on the same day.
The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority said it would be “logistically impossible” to play two games on one day in one stadium.
The New York Times today ponders what possible solutions there could be if this were to occur.
It seem that either one of the games would have to be moved to another venue or the date of one of the games would need to change. The options would be to play it on Saturday or on Monday night. However, the league will not know if that will be necessary until the Sunday before, when the divisional games are played.
There is also the issue of which network has to move their game broadcast. Fox will televise the N.F.C. championship game, and CBS has the rights to the A.F.C. game.
A Monday night game would replace perhaps $3 million to $5 million worth of programming and Saturday’s programming might be worth half that number.
