With the news that Eli Manning has once again been named the Giants' starting quarterback, rookie Davis Webb again finds himself on the outside looking in.
Just one week after ex-coach Ben McAdoo benched Manning in favor of Geno Smith while simultaneously opening up the possibility of Webb receiving playing time to see what the club had in the rookie from Cal.
After McAdoo's firing on Monday, interim coach Steve Spagnuolo reversed course and reinstated Manning as the Giants' top QB with Smith sliding into the backup role once again.
"It's not up to me. I don't get to pick and choose what happens," Webb told reporters on Wednesday. "All I get to do is control what I can control and that's being a good quarterback for the scout team right now and being a great teammate to Eli and Geno and help all of our receivers get ready. ... So, it doesn't really affect me and again, that's out of my control, so I don't really think about it."
Webb was the Giants' third-round pick and the 87th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. He transferred to the University of California after three seasons at Texas Tech and led the Golden Bears' offense with 37 touchdown passes during his lone season at Berkeley.
At present, Spagnuolo has no intentions of trying to develop the rookie QB over the final month of the NFL season.
"The No. 1 focus right now is to figure out a way to beat the Dallas Cowboys, I can tell you that," Spagnuolo said. "There's things that will be talked about ongoing, but we haven't really gotten there. Each week we'll talk about those other things, but right now, in the midst of everything that's going on, with the changes and whatnot, the focus is still going to be on beating Dallas."
The 22-year-old Webb agrees with his new coach.
"[Possibly playing] was something that coach McAdoo and [former general manager] Mr. [Jerry] Reese discussed," he said. "But again, we're about this week. Coach Spags is the new guy, Mr. [Kevin] Abrams is the new interim GM and all we're worried about as a group is just beating Dallas. So, we're excited to have Eli back in there and leading this team Sunday ... I'm excited to watch him play.
"We have a great room and everyone's very supportive of one another, especially E and Geno. ... It's been fun to watch those guys compete and help us win games. But now we're excited to watch E play this Sunday against Dallas."
