The Giants officially announced they have signed DT Barry Cofield to stabilize the interior of the their defensive line.
Cofield was the Giants' fourth-round pick out of Northwestern in 2006 and was a starter on the defensive line until 2010. He left the club in 2011 via free agency, signing with the Washington Redskins, who released him this past February after he missed eight games with ankle injury.
Cofield, 31, had hip, ankle and abdomen issues this year and attracted little interest until the Giants came calling. The defensive line has taken some major hits this season, most notably with Jon Hankins, and now Markus Kuhn's status is in question with a knee injury.
He will fill the roster spot left by the release of safety Brandon Merriweather, who was let go on Wednesday.
The move leaves the Giants with only three safeties: Landon Collins, Cooper Taylor and Craig Dahl.
