When it comes to retiring jersey numbers, the Giants have been inconsistent. The Giants have only retired four uniform numbers since 1972. Frank Gifford (16) and Lawrence Taylor (56) are Hall of Famers, while Phil Simms (11) and Joe Morrison (40) are not.
Outside of those above four numbers, only eight others have received the honor in the 90 year history of the Giants: (1) Ray Flaherty; (4) Tuffy Leemans; (7) Mel Hein; (14) Ward Cuff and Y.A. Tittle; (32) Al Blozis; (42) Charley Conerly and (50) Ken Strong.
Of those eight, Flaherty, Leemans, Hein, Tittle and Strong are HOFers.
The Giants' most recent HOF inductee, Harry Carson (2006), did not get his number (53) retired, so there is some uncertainty whether Strahan will have the honor bestowed upon him.
He should. Not only was Michael one of the franchise's greatest players, he was one of the most visible and well-liked. It is very possible he receives the honor. I vote yes to retiring No. 92 in favor of this great Giant.
