Now Commenting On:

The Giants have the 12th selection in this year's draft, which means they have three of the top 74 picks in a very deep draft. They are going to get some primo talent in the door this summer.

Who those players will be are still unknown. But we will tell you this: based on the tenor of John Mara's voice in his offseason media sessions, they will be players that possess as little risk as possible. He wants players that can hit the ground running at this point, which means no more "projects".

In free agency, the Giants would like to add at least one starter at CB next week, but that may be difficult. SI's Peter King is calling cornerbacks "this year's quarterbacks".

King states in his column this morning that Sam Shields' $39 million deal to stay with the Packers has raised the ceiling on corners:

"...significantly better players at a vital position had their bargaining postures strengthened mightily. Specifically, Alterraun Verner, Vontae Davis, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Aqib Talib will be in the $8-million-plus neighborhood annually..."
As we reported, the Giants have shown interest in Verner. Davis and Rodgers-Cromartie are rumored to be favoring staying with their current clubs and the Giants may not want Talib, who has a history of off-field transgressions.

In a perfect world, the Giants could land OG Geoff Schwartz, WR James Jones and TE Andrew Quarless in free agency. Those three players will go a long way in filling three major holes in the offense.

Then in the draft, they can select either OT Taylor Lewan or OL Zack Martin in Round One and work on their defensive needs the next three rounds.

King also reiterates that the bottom has fallen out on the RB market. He expects many of them to be "disappointed", and predicts teams would rather get fresher legs in the draft than use valuable cap space on veterans.

That's good news for the Giants, who are looking to bring in a veteran RB this summer. If King is right, they'll get away cheap in this area.

But the world isn't perfect. And the Giants have a track record of dancing to their own beat. That will make this week even more interesting for Giant fans.
