That being, now that we have some distance from the incident, there are some important questions and speculation that need to be aired out:
This would be the major one. We now know that there was no reasonable suspicion of alcohol usage and that Jones was not in any condition to take a Breathalyzer test at the scene or to give blood at the hospital. That’s a relief. We also know that he has been given some kind of reckless operation of a vehicle charge. Unless this is a standard citation for people that get into accidents it would seem to indicate that Jones was doing something out of the ordinary. But what could that have been?
One possibility is that Jones fell asleep behind the wheel. I’m not trying to start any rumors. I have no idea what really happened. But he seems to have hit that stanchion at a descent clip. He was moving fast enough to total his car but not fast enough to injure the passengers in the back seat, so he wasn’t speeding. It was very early in the morning. He could have just dozed off after a long night. I guess we’ll never really know the truth until he decides to tell it. But that’s a possibility in my mind.
What’s next for Chad Jones?
There is a good chance that Chad Jones’ career in the NFL is over. It is also likely that his prospects to star in the NFL are caput. He is most guaranteed to lose two very important things for a safety, foot speed and COD. The odds are against him.
Still, you should hold out hope that he can come back and be an effective player. There are plenty of successful safeties in the history of the NFL that don’t have foot speed. Brian Dawkins comes to mind, John Lynch, Adrian Wilson, etc. But can he become the kind of cerebral player that can make up for the lack physical talent with good decision making? Well he seems to be saying all the right things to indicate that he is determined to come back. But a lot of that is coming through his agent. And you don’t know how much of it is hype.
If I were Chad Jones, I’d play baseball. I’m just saying. Baseball is a lower impact sport, he’ll make more money if he’s successful and he can play for 15-20 years. That leg is never going to stop bothering him. Ever.
Who are the Giants going to bring in for safety depth?
And by the way, I’d rather see Chad Jones as a rookie on the field in crutches than see C.C. Brown start at safety again.
It would be better for the Giants to get another safety in there now and have him start learning the system rather bringing in a backup during the season a la Aaron Rouse or whatever his name was. Really the same goes for punt returner: Chris Davis, when it comes to the Giants ailing return game, you are NOT the answer. I’ve perused the remaining free agent returners. There is just nothing out there outside of Tatum Bell (potential).
Keep an eye on:
Man, it’s really sad to hear about Randall Cunningham’s kid. Let’s keep him in our thoughts.
I’m just saying:
Tatum Bell is a free agent and he’s not a Giant why? We’re not still holding out hope that D.J. Ware wont get hurt for the first season in his life ever are we?
And why aren’t the Giants pursuing Champ Bailey? WAKE UP JERRY REESE!!!
