Manningham, who is "75 percent" certain he'll leave via free agency next month, was the team's third receiver, not a Pro Bowler. Granted, he is just coming into his own, but truth be told, he was often injured and in many cases disappeared. He will need to go to a team that has an Eli Manning -or better- at QB (that's about three teams, tops) to continue to develop. He's replaceable. The Giants have plenty of options, both internal and external, at their disposal to do that.
Last season, the team drafted WR Jerrel Jernigan, who is tailor-made for the slot. They also still like Ramses Barden and have a wild cared at their disposal in Dan DePalma - who looks eerily like Wes Welker at times.
Then. of course, Reese has seven draft picks in his pocket to use this April - and he may have more should the league award the Giants compensatory selections after losing Steve Smith, Barry Cofield and Kevin Boss in free agency last summer.
As for head coach Tom Coughlin, don't lose any sleep worrying about his contract extension. It's coming and will most certainly include a nice raise. The team has always held him in high regard and now the rest of the football world has joined them.
"I'll put Tom Coughlin's record up against anybody," Reese said on the NFC Network last week. "I mean anybody. It speaks for itself. We know what he brings to the table for us. He's a terrific football coach and has a terrific coaching staff....there's peaks and valleys to every season and he does a great job in keeping everyone focused."
A nugget from Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger....
"What I hear on one front is Kevin Gilbride Jr. is really hoping the Giants' blocking him from interviewing with the Buccaneers means he's getting a promotion to quarterbacks coach or perhaps wide receivers coach, with Sean Ryan getting bumped to Mike Sullivan's old spot. We'll see if that develops."
