The Giants are adding a piece to their defensive front, just not in the form of Olivier Vernon.
The team announced on Saturday that DT Josh Mauro has been activated while WR Stacy Coley (hamstring) was placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Mauro, 27, was signed by the Giants as a free agent in March but was suspended the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy.
The defensive tackle played in defensive coordinator James Bettcher's system the previous three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and provides depth to the Giants' defensive line.
While the Giants add Mauro to their defense, they are still without their veteran pass rusher in Vernon, who will miss his fifth straight game on Sunday as he continues to battle a high ankle sprain.
The linebacker made some progress this week, returning to practice in a limited fashion earlier in the week, but was ruled out on Friday for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.
Coley, 24, was claimed off waivers by the Giants before Week 3 and appeared in one game as a returner on special teams.
