The Giants added depth to their backfield by bringing in someone they're familiar with.
Big Blue signed former Cowboys running back Rod Smith on Wednesday, adding to the mix of players who will compete for the backup job behind 2018 Rookie of the Year, Saquon Barkley.
Smith, 27, appeared in 16 games for Dallas last season but didn't get much run, finishing with 127 yards rushing and a touchdown along with 60 yards receiving.
He was, however, a more useful player in 2017, and the Giants saw that up close. Smith, who's listed at 6-3, 235 pounds, had a big game against the Giants in MetLife Stadium on Dec. 10 of that year, racking up 160 total yards and two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving. He also scored a rushing touchdown in the 2018 regular-season finale between the two teams.
Smith adds competition for former Giants draft choices Wayne Gallman and Paul Perkins, as well as Eli Penny, Robert Martin and Jon Hilliman.
Gallman was the primary backup last season, averaging 3.5 yards per carry on 51 attempts while adding 14 catches for 89 yards.
