The Giants were awarded a compensatory fourth-round draft pick for the 2018 NFL Draft. They were one of 15 teams to be given an extra selection in April.
The compensatory picks are based on a formula that looks at the free agents signed for the 2017 season compared to the 2016 season, and how they performed and cost the teams involved.
So, for the Giants, losing DT Johnathan Hankins, K Robbie Gould, and OT Marshall Newhouse compared to signing TE Rhett Ellison and QB Geno Smith was calculated in the "net loss formula" to give them their pick.
Other than the Giants, teams like the Packers (four picks), Texans (three picks), and Cowboys (two picks) were awarded in this process.
