Giants RB Saquon Barkley sent the football world in a frenzy by taking his first NFL preseason rush for a 39-yard gain.
That run was all it took. He looked like everything that has been promised since the Giants made him the No. 2 overall pick at the 2018 NFL Draft.
"It felt weird, the feelings are hard to describe,'' Barkley said after the game. "I really didn't get that nervous for this game, I have been preparing for this moment my whole life, I was just excited to get out there and show my team what I have. I only got a couple of carries, but I wanted to show that I'm willing to get the gritty yards, break big plays, and be productive in this offense."
As has been the case since the day Barkley became a member of the Giants, he was quick to deflect the limelight and praise his blockers.
"What I saw on that first carry, the offensive line did a great job of creating space and creating a hole,'' Barkley said. "I was able to have patience and [tight end] Evan [Engram] did an unbelievable job of blocking on the backside, and I was able to burst through the hole, make a guy miss and get up field.''
Try as he may, Barkley won't be able to shirk the New York limelight, especially with some more runs like that.
Well, not from everyone. Eli Manning wasn't quick to dole out effusive praise.
"Just a run, ya know? Let's not go berserk yet, alright?" Manning joked.
