Giants rookie QB Daniel Jones said on Monday he should be good to go this week after twisting his ankle against the Packers.
Now it's the exact opposite.
According to head coach Pat Shurmur, Jones suffered a moderate high ankle sprain and will need to sit out the Giants' Monday Night Football game against the Eagles this week. In turn, veteran QB Eli Manning will likely be back in his starting role.
Jones spoke to reporters via conference call on Monday, saying that he felt regular game soreness in his ankle and believed he would be able to work through it this week in preparation for Philadelphia.
"Yeah, I think I'll be able to practice," Jones said. "It's sore but typical day after a game. I think I'll be good to go."
However, the soreness continued and after receiving an MRI, the sprain was discovered. Shurmur said that surgery won't be needed for Jones, and there is no thought at the moment of shutting him down for the season. But, right now, it looks like Manning may have to be under center for the final four games based off the injury.
Shurmur noted that the injury is similar to that of Saquon Barkley's high ankle sprain, though he said the running back's was less severe. Barkley missed a month, and Jones' recovery could be much longer than that of No. 26.

If this is the end of Daniel Jones' rookie campaign, it isn't how he wants to go out with an eight-game losing streak that followed two straight wins after taking over in Week 3. Jones has accumulated 2,374 yards with a 61.6 completion rate to go along with 18 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. He also has a league-leading 10 fumbles lost.
As for Manning, the 16-year veteran went 0-2 to start the season, after which Shurmur made the call to move on to Jones. He had two touchdowns and two interceptions total in those contests.
"Eli's been ready to go," Shurmur said at practice Wednesday.
It may not have been the way things were planned, but Manning may be getting his farewell tour in these next few games with the Giants.
