Before they finalized a deal to make Joe Judge their next head coach, the Giants requested permission to interview former Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett for the vacant position, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed.

That request was made on Sunday night, according to Vacchiano, before the wild day that unfolded on Tuesday when Rhule landed with the Panthers and the Giants chose Judge.

Despite having been fired by Dallas, Garrett is still technically under contract, which is why the Giants had to request permission to interview him.

Before the Giants' head coaching search got underway, a team source told Vacchiano that Garrett might get an interview for the head coaching spot if he was fired by the Cowboys, but probably wouldn't get the job.

With Judge now on board, he will be allowed to pick his own staff.
