"We're in the process of being in transition in a lot of spots," said Tom Coughlin, "you could take each one of those spots in the special teams operation and they're all open to evaluation, but if you don't look at them in a game, well that's where the evaluation takes place, you chart everything at practice but you've got to put them in a game."
On kickoffs, backup RBs DJ Ware and Andre Brown will get reps Monday against the Jets as will UDFA Victor Cruz.
Cruz will also be tried at punt returner as will CB Aaron Ross. It is unknown if the Giants will give S Antrel Rolle a shot to return punts in a game yet.
The Giants are certain Brown, who was an excellent returner at the collegiate level at NC State, will win one of the jobs. They threw Ware in the fray because he is buried on the depth chart at RB and they need for him to have multiple uses to warrant a roster spot.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw was the Giants' primary kickoff returner in 2008, but he gave way to Hixon and Sinorice Moss last year. Bradshaw's feet and leg issues prevented him from doing much of anything in 2009.
With Bradshaw possibly the feature RB this season, and Moss not making much of a showing in camp due to injury, Ware, Brown and Cruz are being asked to step into the roles.
Last year, the Giants had five players return punts: Hixon (17), Moss (11), Bradshaw (6) and CBs Corey Webster and Kevin Dockery each had one.
