The Giants Plan A worked out perfectly. The Browns went for a quarterback in Baker Mayfield first overall, and Penn State RB Saquon Barkley was waiting for them to grab at No. 2.
But, if the Browns wanted Barkley first before getting their quarterback, the Giants had their Plan B. And it wasn't one of the top quarterbacks on the board.
N.C. State DE Bradley Chubb would have been their pick granted Barkley was gone, reports The Post's Paul Schwartz. Gettleman and the Giants viewed Chubb as the best defensive player in the draft, and thought he would be worthy of the No. 2 pick over a quarterback. Instead, Chubb went fifth overall to the Broncos.
The Giants have a need at defensive end after Jason Pierre-Paul was traded to the Buccaneers earlier this offseason. Outside linebacker Kareem Martin, who was brought in from the Cardinals as a free agent, is expected to work opposite DE Oliver Vernon in James Bettcher's 3-4 scheme.
