Here are six names to keep an eye on:
C Jake Kirkpatrick, TCU
The Giants could have taken Kirkpatrick in the fourth round, and no one would have batted an eye. For whatever reason, Kirkpatrick is still without a team, and would make for a great addition to this year’s rookie group. Kirkpatrick did not start playing football until his senior year of highschool, but he is a late bloomer with legitimate talent.
C Kris O’Dowd, USC
A third round prospect before a rough senior bowl and combine, O’Dowd was still expected to be taken in the fifth or sixth. He went undrafted, possibly because injuries marred his college career. But he is a tough center who plays through the pain, and would be worth a flier. He has ideal size and athleticism for an NFL center.
OT Willie Smith, ECU
Smith is extremely raw, as he has only been a tackle for two years; he began his career on the defensive end. He has legit tackle size (6-5, 310 lbs), but does not yet have the strength to go with those impressive measurables. He is a project for sure, but as he develops, he could turn into a solid NFL tackle.
FB Henry Hynoski, Pittsburgh
The Giants might want to add another fullback to compete with the two already on the roster. Madison Hedgecock is returning from injury and has a lot to prove, while Bear Pascoe is best served as a backup tight end. Hynoski is a legitimate blocking fullback, who some thought would be taken in the middle rounds of the draft.
LB Mario Harvey, Marshall
At the very least, Harvey can be a very good special teams contributor. He is a fiery linebacker and a hard hitter. His stock was considered to be rising in the days before the draft; some thought he could be a fourth round pick, yet he went undrafted. He doesn’t have top speed, and will never be a star, but he could be a solid contributor at a position of need.
LB Mark Herzlich, BC
This guy should be on every team’s wish list right now. The 2008 ACC Defensive Player of the Year is a leader and an inspiration. His college career, and his life, were put in danger when he was diagnosed with cancer, but he has worked his way back. Only one year removed from the treatment, his play understandably suffered. But it would be foolish to count him out again. It’s unbelievable to me that he went undrafted, and I firmly believe he will have a solid NFL career, even if it is just as a special teams captain.
