We will be publishing short previews of each unit over the next few weeks. We'll start with the offensive line since the Giants spent their top selection on Syracuse's Justin Pugh in this year's NFL Draft.
Last year's starters - all returning this season:
LT Will Beatty, LG Kevin Boothe, C David Baas, RG Chris Snee, RT David Diehl
Status: Beatty signed a five-year, $37 million contract in Feburary. Boothe was brought back on a 1-year deal worth $905k. Baas is signed through 2015. Snee's contract runs through 2014, but the last year is voidable. Diehl reworked his deal, which ends after this season.
The Giants are only locked into Beatty and Baas past this season. This is Diehl's final season with the Giants. It's doubtful he'll get re-signed. Snee, depending on how his hip holds up, might be done as well after this year. Boothe can go year-to-year if the Giants need to bring him back.
Others in the building: OT James Brewer, OL Brandon Mosley, OT Matt McCants, OL Selvish Capers, G Michael Jasper, G Stephen Goodin, G Chris DeGeare, C Jim Cordle, G Bryant Browning, G Levy Adcock
Who's coming: OL Justin Pugh, G Eric Herman
What's the plan? Tom Coughlin has intimated that Pugh could be inserted immediately at RT, making Diehl a backup or swing tackle or even expendable. The team has also been grooming Brewer for two seasons now the time for him to start producing is now. Mosley is another fourth round pick the Giants hope to hit on. Both Jerry Reese and Coughlin like McCants and Goodin and they will give them their chance this summer to prove themselves. Cordle is the only pure center the team has besides Baas, although both Boothe and Pugh can play there, too.
The beauty of the Pugh pick is that he can fill in anywhere. if one of the guards or Baas goes down, he can slide over and Brewer or Mosley can be inserted in at RT.
The maximum amount of lineman the Giants will carry is 10, and even that is stretching it. But since they're in flux, they may have no choice. The five starters from last year should all begin the season in their respective spots. The only change could be Pugh for Diehl. Brewer, Mosley, Herman and one other (either Goodin or McCants) will be the reserves.
