Saquon Barkley's tremendous rookie season with the Giants has already earned him a trip to the Pro Bowl as the top vote-getter among running backs.
But the 21-year-old has some fierce competition for the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award. And his name is Baker Mayfield.
The Bovada Sportsbook in Las Vegas has placed the Browns quarterback as the favorite to win the honor at -130 odds, besting Barkley's -110 odds.
Updated odds to win AP Offensive Rookie of the Year: (@BovadaOfficial):- OddsShark (@OddsShark) December 26, 2018
Baker Mayfield -130
Saquon Barkley -110
That may come as a surprise considering Barkley leads all rookie running backs in rushing yards (1,198), touchdowns (14 rushing and receiving), receptions (87) and yards per game (79.9) over 16 games.
But Barkley has failed to surpass 100 rushing yards in each of his last two games. Plus, Mayfield has a very strong case.
The 23-year-old has helped turn a winless Cleveland team into a .500 club with plenty of hope for the future.
Picked No. 1 overall in a quarterback-heavy draft class, Mayfield has soared over his fellow top rookie signal callers. Entering Week 17, he leads the group in every category, including completions (287), completion percentage (64.6), passing yards (3,349), yards per game (256.6), touchdowns (24) and quarterback rating (95.1).
Both Mayfield and Barkley will try to improve their standing in their respective season finales on Sunday.
Mayfield needs just three more TDs to pass Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson and break the NFL record for most touchdown passes by a rookie QB.
Barkley, meanwhile, needs one more rushing TD to pass Bill Paschal for the most by a rookie in Giants history.
The award will be announced at the NFL Honors show the night before the Super Bowl on Feb. 2.
