Tom Coughlin plans on keeping his key contributors healthy, so don't count on too many of the starters playing tonight. The Patriots may play some of their big names, but they will be limited, we think...
Bill Belichick plays every game to win. He has already been told by QB Tom Brady that Brady expects to play because of the truncated preseason, and no one would be surprised if that happens. Belichick uses every opportunity to scout and measure opponents...the Giants are scheduled to be back in Foxborough on Nov 6 for a regular season contest...
“The thing about this game is we’re going to play them again,’’ Belichick said the other day, “so it’s a little different than a preseason game where you don’t plan on seeing that team again."
“I think we can get something out of our preparations for the game, both as a coaching staff and individually for the players and the matchups and so forth. Just get familiar with the team."
"I think any time you play them a second time, you just have a little bit of a head start on that team. I know it’s a preseason game, but still, we’ve seen their best players and their players and all that in preseason against the Jets and Chicago and Carolina. There’s certainly a lot we can take from that. I think that will help us the next time we play them.’’
The Giants will play the game with 85 players courtesy of an exemption given to them by the league. They must be down to 80 by tomorrow and then 53 by Saturday. Tonight is a pivotal night for many.
The punting situation will be resolved. My take is the Giants could select Steve Weatherford strictly based on the facts that he is the better precision kicker plus he is the holder for FGs and PATs.
Not all of the draftees will make the team. Adam Koets' injury might have saved James Brewer a roster spot...for now. WR Jerrel Jernigan and MLB Greg Jones may have to have big nights to stick around. S Tyler Sash is in, as are LB Jacquian Williams and RB Da'Rel Scott. The Giants would be ill advised to cut any of them. They could - COULD- just be looking at their new Jason Sehorn, Jesse Armstead and David Meggett in those three.
At backup QB, it's hard to see the Giants not keeping David Carr. He thrives in their system.
