Ellis, 27, was drafted in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, where he has played for the past four seasons. He was signed by the Giants this offseason but was cut before the end of training camp.
The Giants could be thin at defensive line for Thursday night's game against Washington with DT Cullen Jenkins (hamstring), DT Jay Bromley (knee) and Markus Kuhn (knee) each appearing on the team's injury report on Monday.
Right move at the right time. Ellis probably should have made the team out of camp instead of Markus Kuhn. He is certainly a space-eater, and combined with Jon Hankins the Giants might finally make some progress in the run-stuffing portion of their defensive game plan.
Washington is killing it on the ground right now, so the Giants need all the help they can get. The Skins have a tough 1-2 punch in RBs Alfred Morris and rookie Matt Jones who took turns logging in 100-yard games the first two weeks against Ndamakong Suh and Miami and then the Rams this Sunday.
