What an interesting development we have here, particularly as Victor Cruz is preparing for his return to the lineup.
It seems as if the Giants are investing in precautionary options or are on the hunt for a veteran fourth wide receiver.
Wes Welker has been one of the best slot receivers in the NFL, when healthy, but concussions have made it difficult for him to consistently stay on the field. Last year with the Broncos, Welker started just eight games and hauled in only 49 receptions, his lowest total in almost a decade.
Hakeem Nicks is certainly a familiar name, but Nicks has been unable to catch on in Indianapolis and Tennessee, and teams like New Orleans and Dallas both opted not to sign him to a deal after workouts. The Giants don't even run the same system Nicks once thrived in.
I'm not sure Welker or Nicks are going to become Giants.
We know Chris Cooley was coming in, so it's like an old-timers day out at QDTC. They will also be working out a QB named Phil Sims. No, not THAT Phil Simms.
QB Phillip Sims, is a UDFA out of Winston-Salem who was with the Arizona Cardinals this preseason. Sims was fairly impressive as he was 28 of 51 for 261 yards with 3 TD and no INTs. Sims worked out for the Seahawks last week.
Will the Giants find a diamond in the rough here? Not unless they are going backwards. These workouts are usually to see where some of these players are physically in case they are looking for bodies down the road.
