The Giants worked yesterday at QDTC with a different look on defense than just a week ago. The middle of the back seven now consists of Jameel McClain at MLB and Jeromy Miles and Brandon Meriweather at safety.
Cooper Taylor (toe) and Nat Berhe (calf) played with the twos and rookie Landon Collins (knee), who was expected to practice Tuesday, was held at least for another day.
"He’s in every meeting, he’s in every plan, he’s interested," head coach Tom Coughlin said of Collins. "After what he’s missed on the field, he has an opportunity to listen to the coaches talk about it in the classroom. He’s up to date on everything that we’re doing."
The starting DTs continue to be Markus Kuhn and Jon Hankins, but the second string of Kenrick Ellis and Jay Bromley also have Coughlin optimistic.
"Well, they’re big, solid guys inside," Coughlin said. "What I like is they enjoy playing and they seem to be able to hold the point in there pretty good. So we just need to keep those two getting better."
The coach intimated that newly-signed LB Ashlee Palmer's ability to avoid injury was on of the reasons the team brought him in...
"Worked out very well. And I do like the fact that he’s played without injury for quite some time. That could’ve been the reason right there."
Coughlin had no timetable on MLB Jon Beason (knee) or WR Victor Cruz (calf), but did say WR Rueben Randle (tendonitis) would be back on Wednesday.
Coughlin did say Cruz was "day-to-day" but would not commit to whether he would be ready for Saturday night's game against the Jets. So, is it time to get concerned?
"I’m concerned, yeah," Coughlin said. "Because obviously there were a couple of slotted opportunities there that didn’t take place, or one. Of course this would have been the second one, if he’s not ready to go. So, yeah, yeah, I am. But I would like to see him get out there, and be able to stay out there. That’s what our real intent is. As soon as that can be done, that’s possible, then that’s what will happen."
Odell Beckham Jr. failed to reel in any of his five targets last Saturday against the Jaguars, but Coughlin doesn't appear too worried, yet...
"To me, he had a chance for one ball that was thrown out in front of him. He had a drop. Again, to me, it’s timing, it’s rhythm, it’s all of those things. But that would be where I would start."
It was stated RB Andre Williams is playing with more conviction and confidence in his second season. The coach agreed.
"Well, he’s obviously second time around—he knows more about what he’s doing. He’s more comfortable doing it. He is a powerful runner, and when given the opportunity, he’s demonstrated."
C Weston Richburg (knee) sat out Tuesday. Dallas Reynolds continues to get the reps at center whenever Richburg is out.
Coughlin answered an inquiry about if CB Chykie Brown (knee) was ready to return with an emphatic "no."
