His knee has been a chronic issue, in both of his stints here in New York, and it looks like he may be done. The knee is expected to be ready for next year, but Jacobs may not want to risk his health and go through the rigor of maintaining the joint for another season.
Jacobs told SNYGiants insider Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News that if he comes back for another season, it will be with the Giants:
“I’m only playing here,” Jacobs said. “Screw all them other teams. Screw all them other teams. I’m a Giant. I tried (playing elsewhere) already. I’m a Giant. I am a Giant up and down, 0-16, 16-0, 8-8, whatever you want to call it. I’m a Giant. That’s what it is. And this is the organization that I love.”
So, is he done, or is he coming back?
"Whether or not I want to run my new cartilage down," Jacobs said when asked what might keep him from retuning. "Of course it’s a surgery that can be done again, but with people making this procedure the way they do it, it kind of stops people from getting knee replacements, but it’s also like $10,000 more expensive than a knee replacement."
The Giants called on Jacobs at the beginning of the season to help bolster their backfield after Andre Brown went don with another leg fracture in preseason. He responded with several big performances. But the knee acted up again and Jacobs ended up on IR in December.
"I just ran it down to where I couldn’t keep going," explained Jacobs. "The rest of the cartilage I had in there was chipping and breaking and chipping and breaking until I was rubbing bone on bone. That came to be really painful so it started filling with fluid to protect the joint, to not rub bone on bone. I started draining it and it didn’t feel better once I drained, but once I was rubbing, which wasn’t too bad, but as I would go and drain it and run it just kept grinding it down and it started to be so painful I couldn’t continue to go."
Can he go this season? The way things are going with the Giants these days, it's doubtful they continue to look to the past for answers.
