With free agent TE Jermichael Finley's agent claiming a doctor has cleared his client for field duty, several teams have already reached out to inquire about his services, including the Giants (Orr).
From Rotoworld: Free agent TE Jermichael Finley's (neck surgery) agent, Blake Baratz, told Profootballtalk that Dr. Joseph Maroon has given the tight end full medical clearance:
Maroon, the Steelers' team neurosurgeon, performed Finley's surgery. While this is good news, it's just one doctor's opinion. Finley previously visited the Seahawks and Dolphins, and Seattle failed him on his physical. The Packers are also said to be interested in re-signing Finley after they didn't do much to upgrade the position in free agency or the draft. Green Bay is ultra-conservative when it comes to giving clearance to players who have suffered serious neck injuries. See: Collins, Nick. Baratz says Finley has a visit lined up on Friday with a team he refused to name. That team isn't the Giants. In fact, no one knows which team it is. What is known is that Finley would like to play for Ben McAdoo, his former position coach in Green Bay and the current OC for the Giants.
But Finley still has a big hurdle to clear before joining any team, especially the Giants. He has to be cleared medically and the Giants medical team is known for their stringency. They currently have a player with a neck injury in RB David Wilson and are still in the process of evaluating whether or not it is safe for him to play.
Finley would have to be signed to a near-minimum or "prove-it" deal for the Giants to bring him in. He is said to be willing to accept those terms. But the clearance right now is the main hurdle.
The 6'5", 247 lb Finley, 27, was the Packers third round selection out of Texas in the 2008 NFL Draft. His best season was in 2011 when he caught 55 passes for 767 yards and 8 TDs. He is obviously a natural fit for McAdoo's offense, even if he is only a part time contributor. As Conor Orr mentioned, Finley could serve as a mentor to some of the younger TEs on the team as well.
