From the beginning of the offseason to the start of the 2019 NFL Draft, Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins has been linked to the Giants with their No. 6 overall pick. But, as the weeks turned into days, reports that Duke QB Daniel Jones was "their guy" which shifted perspective about that first pick.
But as Big Blue went on the clock down in Nashville, former Giants S Landon Collins was certain it was going to be Haskins who got the call. Instead, he was seen back home in Maryland shaking his head as Jones walked his way on stage to take the jersey from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
A few picks later, though, Haskins found himself in the same boat as Collins this offseason: Two suspected Giants turned Redskins.
"Honestly, I thought the Giants were going to take him," Collins told NJ.com's Ryan Dunleavy. "It slipped into our hands. I was like, 'Wow, we got the best quarterback. We stole the best quarterback in the draft. Awesome.' "
As Collins has gotten to know Haskins, he has nothing but good things to say about the Buckeye product. And of course, Haskins is just as ready to "tear up" the Giants as Collins is twice a year.
"Great guy, great quarterback, humble guy, down to earth, ready to ball," Collins said about Haskins. "Ready to tear up the Giants defense for the next five years and continue on from there. I think we're going to go get one (a Super Bowl) -- or a couple of them."
He may not like the Giants passing up on him, but Haskins actually finds himself in a better situation with Washington than in New York when it comes to playing time in 2019. Jones is going to sit behind veteran QB Eli Manning for a year, unless something else transpires where he must take over. Haskins, though, will get to compete with Case Keenum -- another new face for the Redskins -- and Colt McCoy during training camp for the starting job under center.
And Collins wasn't the only former Giant that has talked to Haskins about New York passing on him. Haskins said WR Odell Beckham Jr. reached out via text the night of the Draft to simply say "Show 'em why."
Well, that's exactly what Haskins -- and Collins -- will have in mind for the Redskins when the Giants come up on the schedule for years to come.
