Mara said the Giants also offered “a huge deal” to Steve Smith last season – reportedly around $35 million over five years—that was rejected before the receiver got injured.“The truth is last year during the season, we tried to sign him to a long-term deal, a huge deal that would have made him one of the highest-paid receivers in the league,” Mara said. - Jeff Roberts / Bergen Record

The Giants have placed Rhett Ellison in the concussion protocol after Sunday's loss to the Jets and now have just one healthy tight end on the roster heading into their bye week.

Ellison joins Janoris Jenkins and Nate Solder in the protocol after the trio all left the game at different points. He caught all three of his targets against the Jets for 42 yards of offense before exiting the game.

Sterling Shepard has been in and out of the protocol all season and missed the big all-New York matchup on Sunday.

It seems clear that something is not quite right with Saquon Barkley, who appears to be playing hurt. But on the day after his worst game in the NFL, Barkley was feeling "much better", according to Giants coach Pat Shurmur.

And the Giants have no plans at all to shut him down.

"Absolutely not," Shurmur said.

Pat Shurmur was still the Giants head coach on Monday morning, which is how it will likely stay for at least the remainder of the season. And his assistant coaches will apparently remain on the job with him, too.

On the morning after what might have been the most humiliating loss of his Giants tenure, Shurmur said: "Having slept on it, no, I'm not going to make any coaching changes." He had said the same thing in the moments after the Giants' 34-27 loss to the Jets on Sunday afternoon, but that didn't stop speculation that he could change his mind -- or that ownership could change it for him.

A team source confirmed, though, that there were no immediate plans for ownership to either fire Shurmur or to force any staff shakeup in the wake of the Giants' 2-9 record -- at least until the end of the season.

The Giants came up short Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where the 34-27 final score favored the Jets.

Perhaps the margin would have been much further apart if not for Giants rookie wide receiver Darius Slayton's career-best performance.

Slayton caught 10 passes on 14 targets and compiled 121 yards (12.1 per reception) and totaled two touchdowns, including a long of 39.

Changes coming to Giants? 00:01:05
SNY's Ralph Vacchiano on the state of the Giants after they suffered their 6th straight loss at the hands of the Jets 34-27

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - It did not take long into his post-game press conference for Pat Shurmur to get a question about his job security, and for the Giants coach to again insist that he's not concerned. The man who insisted this week that "I'm built for this" wasn't going to flinch, even after a hideous loss to the Jets.

"My concern is putting a team on the field that's going to win a football game," Shurmur said. "That's my concern."

Of course, what's really concerning is that he hasn't done that very much in his tenure with the Giants. And he couldn't have picked a worse time to have added on another loss.

Giants star running back Saquon Barkley went into the X-ray room after the team's loss to the Jets, according to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

Head coach Pat Shurmur said that Barkley got "banged up" during the game, and did not say anything else about it.

When asked if he got injured during the game, Barkley only said "next question."

In their first game against each other at their shared home in MetLife Stadium, Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold put up some solid numbers for their respective teams. But Darnold got the last laugh as the Jets pulled out a 34-27 win over the Giants.

On paper, it seems that Jones got the best of Darnold based on individual statistics--Jones finished the game 26-of-40 for 308 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions, compared to Darnold's not as eye popping performance of 230 yards and one touchdown on 19-of-30 passing--Darnold also ran in for a touchdown, as well.

But the glaring issues for Jones came at a familiar spot that's been hurting him all season: holding on to the football while in the pocket.

Giants fall to 2-8 00:02:15
Despite 4 TD passes from Daniel Jones the Giants came up short in their 34-27 loss to the cross-town rival Jets

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The season has already been embarrassing for the Giants. On Sunday they managed to make it worse.

And that's a huge problem for Giants coach Pat Shurmur and his coaching staff after the Giants lost to the awful Jets, 34-27. Things were bad enough, but a loss to the crosstown rivals is a humiliating defeat that is sure to enrage owner John Mara. Even worse: They've now got two weeks to stew about it, thanks to an ill-timed bye.

To this point, Shurmur wasn't really on a hot seat and his coaching staff wasn't in much danger. The Giants underwent an uncharacteristic, in-season change just two years ago and don't really have an appetite to do that again. GM Dave Gettleman also genuinely seems to like Shurmur as a coach, and according to a team source has preached patience and believes the team is headed in the right direction.

Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins exited Sunday's matchup with the Jets and headed to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion.

Jenkins was shaken up after tackling tight end Trevon Wesco and walked to the locker room as the Jets kicked a field goal to take a 34-27 lead in the fourth quarter over the Giants.

In his place, the Giants sent out Sam Beal to make his NFL debut.

The Giants already saw Nate Solder be ruled out for the remainder of the game after exiting with a concussion in the first half.

Nate Solder left the field in the middle of the second quarter of the Giants-Jets matchup Sunday and has been ruled out for the remainder of the game with a concussion.

Solder limped off the field and went into the medical tent on the sideline with less than eight minutes to play in the half, missing the remainder of that drive--Eric Smith made his NFL debut at left tackle for the Giants in Solder's absence.

The Giants scored their second touchdown of the game on the drive, but a bad snap by Zak DeOssie resulted in the Riley Dixon missing on a throw into the end zone for a two-point conversion. As a result, the Giants were still down 14-13.

Why Jones turnovers the ball 00:02:54
Bart Scott and Ray Lucas demonstrate why Daniel Jones has turnover issues. They point out how the Jets can take advantage in their matchup.

Daniel Jones has showed some growing pains during his rookie season, specifically when it comes to turning the ball over.

Jones has thrown eight interceptions and fumbled the ball another eight times, now leading the league in turnovers.

SNY's Bart Scott and Ray Lucas discussed why Jones turns the ball over so much, and pointed out how the Jets can take advantage of the quarterback in their upcoming matchup.

Jets vs Giants preview 00:01:34
SNY's Ralph Vacchiano on the extreme pressure both the struggling Jets and Giants face as the teams go head to head on Sunday

With the Giants and Jets playing each other on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, it will be the first time that quarterbacks Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold face off in the regular season.

Both QBs are just 22-years-old -- in fact, Jones is nine days older than Darnold -- and are already leading their teams as starters since being drafted. The Giants selected Jones with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, while the Jets took Darnold third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky and CBS analyst Rich Gannon, both former NFL quarterbacks, spoke with Steve Serby of the NY Post to debate which quarterback looks better so far in their young careers.

The Giants waived DL Olsen Pierre and promoted OL Evan Brown off their practice squad on Saturday morning, according to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

The team needed some extra offensive line depth as C Jon Halapio is out with a hamstring injury and OT Mike Remmers is doubtful with a back injury for Sunday's game against the Jets.

Pierre, a third-year player out of Miami (FL), has played in nine games for the Giants this season and has eight tackles and two sacks. Pierre played 24 games for the Arizona Cardinals from 2017-2018, recording 42 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

Peppers knows Giants need to win 00:00:51
New York Giants safety Jabrill Peppers doesn't like the Giants are 2-7 but knows they need to beat the Jets in order to turn things around.

Heading into Sunday's game at MetLife Stadium, there's been plenty of talk about the New York City bragging rights at stake between the Giants and Jets.

But players like Jabrill Peppers just want to get out there and play the game.

"We're preparing like hell to beat the Jets, and that's really it. I'm not trying to talk too much until we start putting stuff on film," Peppers said.

"It's not about who the best team is, it's about who executes best on that day. They went out and executed well against Dallas and got the win. Last week, they didn't execute so well and they didn't get the win. That's all it comes down to. We're not really paying attention to numbers."

The Giants will again be short handed on the offensive side of the ball this Sunday when they face the Jets, as Evan Engram and Sterling Shepard have been ruled out for the game.

Engram suffered a mid-foot sprain last Monday against the Cowboys and had pretty much expected not being able to suit up Sunday when he spoke to the media earlier in the week.

"Not right n-, I mean, that's all [up to] trainers and coaches," Engram told reporters on Wednesday, cutting himself off when asked if he expects to be active.

"Take it this week and got the bye week next week and we'll see where we are."

There is a Quarterback Revolution going on in the NFL, with one generation taking the baton from the last. The days of Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers and Eli Manning are either over already, or will be soon.

And the new kids are already on the block.

Every four years, the Giants and Jets face off at MetLife Stadium for city bragging rights. And this time around, both teams certainly want to come away with a win as they've struggled at this point in the season.

For star RB Saquon Barkley, his focus is solely on giving his Giants team that win. But there's also some family bragging rights at stake as well.

As a child, Barkley was a Jets fan, and that was due to his father, Alibay's, loyalty to the green and white. In fact, the man has a Jets tattoo on his forearm.

Saquon Barkley
Saquon Barkley

With the Giants facing off against the Jets on Sunday, Saquon Barkley finds himself in a little family predicament.

Barkley's father, Alibay Barkley, grew up a diehard Jets fan, and that fandom found it's way to his son as well. Barkley has mentioned in the past that he grew up a Curtis Martin and Jets fan, but he found his way to the Giants last season.

So that got us at SNY thinking: How would if your son or daughter was playing your favorite team? Who would you root for?

Every New York sports fan has their one favorite player or coach, past or present, that they absolutely love. They've given years of service to help your favorite team win, and they've done so while playing or managing at the highest level.

But not every marriage has come to a happy ending in the Big Apple.

While this city has had its fair share of legends on every team, there have also been some pretty bad breakups throughout each league. And, as agents of chaos in this case, we're here to remind you of some of the ugliest divorces that your favorite teams have seen in recent years.

The Giants and Jets are a combined 3-14, one year after going a combined 9-23, one year after going a combined 8-24. That's a 20-61 record over the last 2 ½ seasons, for a "winning" percentage of .246.

So no, the Giants and Jets don't match up particularly well with the rest of the professional football world right now. But how do they match up with each other?

In advance of their big showdown on Sunday at the Meadowlands, let's take a look:

DeAndre Baker
DeAndre Baker

The Giants felt the need to trade back into the first round in the 2019 NFL Draft to get DeAndre Baker, who the team's highest-graded cornerback coming out of Georgia.

It hasn't looked that way so far this season, though.

Baker has certainly been going through rookie struggles, with a Pro Football Focus grade of 37.8 on the season thus far. He just seems to have a big miscue almost every contest, and that definitely goes for Monday Night Football against the Cowboys when -- on 3rd-and-12 for Dallas -- he played in zone coverage while everyone else was in man and Amari Cooper broke out a 45-yard touchdown run.

Giants WR Sterling Shepard was on the field Thursday before practice officially got underway, stretching and casually tossing the football with his teammates before heading to the sidelines.

Shepard, who was wearing his helmet and pads, was in Pittsburgh on Wednesday to see a concussion specialist after his concussion symptoms returned over the weekend.

The receiver, who was a full practice participant at the end of last week, had been cleared and was expected to play Monday night against the Patriots before his symptoms returned and he alerted the team.

After the Giants fell for the fifth straight time in Monday's 37-18 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, New York knows the clock is ticking on its 2019 season as it turns the page to Week 10.

At 2-7, a win in the Giants' matchup against the Jets (1-7) Sunday at MetLife Stadium serves as the last glimmer of hope on the with six more games -- three divisional contests -- to follow.

Pat Shurmur admitted as much when he met the media for his weekly press conference Wednesday, on a shortened week of game prep after the Giants' loss two days prior.

Every NFL player knows the risks they take when they step on a football field. They know their body will eventually break down, and later in life they will be in pain. They rarely express any fear of their fate, or the future agony that comes with it.

Except when the body part in question is their brain.

"If you tell me I've got to get a hip replacement in 10 years, alright, fine, I'll deal with that in 10 years," Giants receiver Golden Tate said on Wednesday. "But if you tell me, 'Hey, there's a chance you might not be able to remember a lot of your career, or your childhood, or your children's childhood? That's scary, man. It gives me chills."

Engram, who is in a walking boot, is "day-to-day, week-to-week," Shurmur said.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported earlier that Engram is headed for a second opinion with Dr. Robert Anderson. As SNY's Ralph Vacchiano pointed out, he is the same doctor that saw Saquon Barkley for an opinion on his high ankle sprain.

The Giants' offense was without WR Sterling Shepard for the fourth straight week this past Monday, as he continued to battle back from his second concussion of the season.

That wasn't supposed to be the case, though, when an independent doctor cleared Shepard from concussion protocol after he practiced all of last week.

It wasn't until the Giants released a statement on Sunday, where head coach Pat Shurmur said Shepard informed the team late Saturday night that he wasn't feeling well. They though it was best to put him back in the protocol after he ultimately felt the same on Sunday.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur revealed during a conference call on Tuesday that CB Sam Beal will be activated off the IR ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Jets. And the team made it official, with S Sean Chandler being waived to clear up a roster spot.

Beal's time on the IR -- he suffered from a hamstring injury during training camp and has been rehabbing it since -- is up after Week 9, and the Giants deemed him healthy enough to return. He made a 53-man roster spot and went on the IR, so he wouldn't get cut and potentially picked up by another team.

Shurmur spoke last week about Beal, and said he liked what he saw.

Giants had opportunities to win 00:01:16
SNY Insider Ralph Vacchiano breaks down the Giants loss to the Cowboys citing Daniel Jones' turnover woes but had opportunities to win.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - If there was one consistent knock on Daniel Jones coming out of college, it was his penchant for turning the ball over -- including too many fumbles.

That has become his biggest problem so far in the NFL.

He added three more turnovers to his season total in a 37-18 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night. He now has eight interceptions and 10 fumbles (eight lost) in his eight games (and seven starts). Both of his first two turnovers led to Cowboys field goals on Monday night, not to mention huge momentum swings. The third was returned for a garbage time touchdown that padded the final score.

Shurmur on Daniel Jones' fumbles 00:01:07
New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur liked QB Daniel Jones decisions against the Cowboys but says he needs to hold onto the ball better.

The Giants got off to a fantastic start Monday night against the Cowboys, as Antoine Bethea intercepted Dak Prescott on the first play from scrimmage. He was tackled at the Cowboys' eight-yard line, giving the Giants about as short of a field as you can ask for on their opening drive of the game.

They came away with a field goal.

That was more or less the story of the night as Big Blue converted just one touchdown on five red zone attemps, was outscored 21-3 in the fourth quarter, and lost to the Cowboys, 37-18, dropping their record to 2-7.

A suprise guest made its way to MetLife Stadium Monday night, when a black cat jumped onto the field in the second quarter of the Giants' game against the Cowboys.

The cat showed excellent lateral movement, getting to the outside before cutting back to the middle and finding its way into the end zone.

Leonard Williams will make his Giants debut on the biggest of stages: a Monday Night Football game against the team's biggest rival in the Dallas Cowboys.

The Giants, who gave up a third-round pick and fifth-rounder (can turn into a fourth if they extend him), are hoping to find some untapped potential in the 25-year-old Williams. That's exactly why GM Dave Gettleman sparked a trade with the Jets, and they're optimistic enough to reportedly begin contract extension talks before Thanksgiving.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Williams obviously wants to start this next chapter in his career on a high note, and to get on Giants fans' good side, there's no better matchup for him than the one he'll see Monday night.

Before the NFL trade deadline came to pass, the Giants were active in obtaining DL Leonard Williams from the Jets. However, many believed GM Dave Gettleman would move players like Janoris Jenkins or even Nate Solder, who were getting several inquiries from other teams.

And while the Giants may have listened to those calls, they didn't even entertain those that involved TE Evan Engram

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, one team thought to call about the 2017 first-rounder out of Ole Miss. But no matter the offer, the Giants remained steadfast in keeping Engram in Giants blue.

The Giants have announced that WR Sterling Shepard will not suit up against the Cowboys on Monday night.

This is surprising news, as Shepard was cleared from concussion protocol following a full week of regular practice, and head coach Pat Shurmur made it sound like the Giants just needed the doctor's clearance for him to make his return. But the situation changed.

According to Shurmur, Shepard told the team late Saturday that he wasn't feeling good, and that was the same result on Sunday as well.

It's no secret that the Giants traded for DL Leonard Williams with the intentions to sign him to an extension, with his rookie contract up at the end of the season. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano originally reported that fact last week when the deal went down, saying the team had an exclusive 4 1/2-month negotiating window to talk.

And it looks like they're getting started right away.

Williams has yet to take a snap in the blue and white, yet the Giants will be starting extension talks before Thanksgiving, per ESPN's Adam Schefter

Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch is officially listed on the team's injury report as questionable for Monday night's game against the Giants, but according to a new report, it's unlikely that the linebacker suits up.

Todd Archer, who covers the Cowboys for ESPN, has reported that barring a sudden change, Vander Esch will be sidelined due to a neck injury that he suffered two weeks ago in Dallas' win over the Eagles.

The hope was that the Cowboys' bye week would afford the playmaking linebacker some extra recovery time, but it now sounds like he will not be on the field on Monday night.

The 19th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Vander Esch started the first seven games for the Cowboys, racking up 54 combined tackles with a forced fumble and two pass break-ups.

Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton credits his rookie successes to every team in the NFL.

Slayton was the Giants' fifth-round pick at the 2019 NFL draft. Like most Round 5 selections, Slayton thought he deserve to be picked ahead of Day 3 of the draft. While in the past, Slayton said every team passing on him at least four times motivates him in the present.

"I got drafted in the fifth round, and I felt like I was a better player than that," Slayton told The Post. I feel like I was a Day 1, Day 2 guy. I went on Day 3, and it's definitely something that's fueled me since I've been here."

Giants running back Saquon Barkley likes what he sees from his team's offense this season despite their 2-6 record.

Barkley said it's the finishing touch that has to be better for Big Blue, and he's hoping his team will get better in that regard starting Monday against the Cowboys.

"Obviously with DJ (Daniel Jones) at quarterback now, I think you see how different we have been since the beginning of the year," Barkley said. "I personally feel like we have been very successful, especially on the offensive side of the ball, putting points up. At the end of the day, we haven't figured out how to win more games, that's the thing we have to get better at."

Giants wide reciever Sterling Shepard has been cleared from concussion protocol following Friday's practice. The receiver suffered his second concussion of the season in Week 5 against Minnesota and hasn't played since.

Rookie cornerback Corey Ballentine missed the last two games with a concussion as well, but has also been cleared from the concussion protocol. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reports that both players could be in line to play when the Giants host the Cowboys Monday night at MetLife Stadium.

Both Shepard and Ballentine were listed as full participants in Friday's practice.

After trading for defensive lineman Leonard Williams prior to Tuesday's NFL trade deadline, the question on the minds of Giants fans remains: Will he stay with Big Blue after the eight games remaining this season?

In an interview posted on Giants.com Friday, general manager Dave Gettleman confirmed that the team would certainly like that to be the case.

"We gave up a [third-round pick] and a [fifth-round pick]" Gettleman said. "Our goal is to sign him long-term. He's only 25 years old. And obviously talented. He's a piece you can build around."

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur already has an answer for ESPN if they ask about mic'ing him up for Monday Night Football this week.

"No," he said quickly.

The reason the question came up in the first place was after Jets QB Sam Darnold made headlines for his "seeing ghosts" comment while wearing a mic two weeks ago. And that was something Shurmur didn't really like.

Giants QB Daniel Jones and RB Saquon Barkley are arguably the two most popular players on the Giants. And both of them are in the Top 10 in the NFL when it comes to jersey sales. Barkley came in at No. 6 and Jones came in at No. 9.

The Cowboys are the only other team in the league to place two players in the Top 10.

After the NFL trade deadline came and went Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, the Giants' move -- or lack thereof -- showed that the team has not given up on the 2019 campaign.

As the Giants (2-6) enter the second half of the regular season's slate -- starting Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, against the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys (4-3) -- they do so with their roster seemingly rejuvenated.

The Giants traded Tuesday for Jets fifth-year defensive lineman Leonard Williams, who hit the ground running with the team Wednesday, looking to bolster the trenches and patch up an area of needed improvement on a struggling defense.

When the Giants selected Sam Beal in the third round of the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft, they expected the former Western Michigan cornerback to have more of an impact by now.

Over the past two years, Beal has appeared in just one training camp practice -- as a rookie. He reaggravated his shoulder injury in 2018 and had season-ending surgery, and he started his sophomore campaign off hobbled by hamstring issues to begin the summer during a non-padded workout.

Despite his extended absence -- he has never played a snap of preseason action, only suiting up for one practice in pads -- Beal is eligible to return from injured reserve next week, which gives the Giants options. Head coach Pat Shurmur said that the Giants are monitoring the situation closely as Beal works back.
