The Giants chose Virginia Tech RB David Wilson with the 32nd overall selection in the first round of the NFL Draft last night at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Wilson was left on the board with several other highly rated players such as OL Cordy Glenn of Georgia, WR Stephen Hill of Georgia Tech, Alabama LB Courtney Upshaw and TE Coby Fleener of Stanford.
“There were still several players on the board that we liked. But David was rated the highest player,” Giants GM Jerry Reese said. “It was a little bit of a best value, plus he was the highest player there at the time. And he filled a need as well. You like to get a combination of both things.”
Wilson, who will turn 21 this June, was the ACC Player of the Year in 2011 and had one more year of eligibility left at VT. He is a home-run hitter out of the backfield and on special teams. His presence give the Giants and explosive trio of backs along with Ahmad Bradshaw and Da'Rel Scott.
“My whole career, I have been in a two-back system,” Wilson said as per the AP, noting he played with Ryan Williams and Darren Evans at Virginia Tech. “...I am a good team player. In this league, one running back can’t do it all. I look forward to working with those guys and making the Giants closer to the top of the league (in rushing).”
The Giants have two picks in tonight's action, a second rounder (No. 63) and one pick in the third (No. 94). The team did not trade DE Osi Umenyiora and according to reports has no intention of doing so....for now.
The Giants also signed veteran DT Shaun Rogers yesterday, adding some depth to their defensive line. From ESPN New York's Ohm Youngmisuk....
Canty underwent knee surgery after the Super Bowl but is expected to be ready for the season opener, according to coach Tom Coughlin.
"Hopefully, I can bring some of my experience over the past few years and just fit in and play a part," Rogers said in a team news release. "I still most definitely feel that I can bring something to the table. I might not be exactly like I was in '06, but I still have some tricks and I still have some good push in me."
