March 8th always reminds me of Ali-Frazier I, which was incredibly 41 years ago today. I predicted Ali would win in a decision. Did not foresee the Frazier left hook from the basement in the 15th. Neither did Ali, who ended up on his backside with a broken jaw...
Now to the Giants, who are one of the few teams not in the running for the services of Eli Manning's brother Peyton. We have our Manning. And our championships. Time for others to dream.
Peyton's new place could be anywhere, including right here in the NFC East with Washington. And don't count out Philadelphia, who may have run their course with Michael Vick. Both teams have the ability to step into this thing and make an offer. The collective thinking is that Peyton will avoid the Northeast and play in either Miami or Arizona, but you never know these days.
Here are some nuggets from the Giants' beat writer pool....
Jeff Roberts of the Bergen Record reports that the Giants have told veteran free agent OT Kareem McKenzie to find another place to play this year:
The team recently told RT Kareem McKenzie — who has manned the position for the Giants since 2005, starting 105 games in that span — to “go shopping” for another team, according to a source in the organization. It will not bring him back for another season.
The discussion was not a surprise as McKenzie is an unrestricted free agent and will turn 33 in May. However he did start all 16 regular-season games the past two years.
SNY Insider Mike Garafolo reports the Giants have found a replacement for Kevin Gilbride Jr, who was elevated to WR coach from offensive quality control coach:
The Giants have hired LSU assistant coach Lunda Wells as offensive quality control coach, FootballScoop.com is reporting. Wells was an assistant to the head coach for the Tigers and an assistant special teams coach, so that's a nice bump for him.
