Yahoo! Sports Ranks Giants D-Line 3rd Best in NFLJason Cole of Yahoo! Sports took the time to rank all 32 defensive lines in the NFL and the Giants, considering all of their recent shortcomings, finished third.
The Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens were ranked 1-2 respectively. Other notables: Dallas (5th), Washington (9th), Philadelphia (13th) and the Jets (15th). The Julius Peppers-less Carolina Panthers were ranked last.
Cole had this to say about the Giants' defensive front:
Between injuries (Justin Tuck(notes) was most banged up and Chris Canty(notes) was never healthy) and the loss of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, no team went backward more than the Giants last year with their line play. Defensive end Osi Umenyiora(notes) didn’t help matters with his whining. That said, this group has the best depth in the league, adding high-ceiling end Jason Pierre-Paul(notes) through the NFL draft. They still miss the professionalism of Michael Strahan(notes), but they should get back to what they were in the 2007 title run.Giants' rookie safety Chad Jones is said to be progressing well five days after totaling his SUV on a New Orleans street. His father, Al Jones, has told reporters that his son is in "good spirits" and no further surgery on Chad's mangled left leg has been planned. He did, however, mention that skin grafts may be needed, but that is a procedure that is well down the road.

Roster News: Giants Down to 77 PlayersThe Giants currently have 80 players - the maximum number a team can take to training camp - listed on their website. That is including yesterday's release of KR Chris Davis.
Still on the roster are WR Domenik Hixon, S Chad Jones and OL Kevin Boothe, none of who are expected to play in 2010.
It also includes the four draft choices they signed last week and the two that still remain without a contract: first and second-round selections DE Jason Pierre-Paul and DT Linval Joseph.
The Giants may be waiting to put Hixon (knee) on IR. Why they are waiting this long to do so is unknown. It doesn't appear he has even a remote chance of making it back this year.
Jones has been reported to be on the Non-Football Injury List, although the Giants have not formally made such an announcement. There are two NFI lists - active and reserve. Jones will not be active in 2010, so he's destined for the reserve, which means he won't be counted towards the roster.
Boothe (torn pectoral) has been told by doctors that he will miss four months. He won't be cleared to play until November. He could be a candidate for PUP, which means he misses the first six games but has to be active by week 12 or he remains ineligible. Either way, he's not going to be counted towards the team's active roster until November, if at all.
So, if my math is right, the Giants technically have only 77 players who can participate in camp, unless they rule those three out in the next few weeks and bring in three new players.
Is it possible that they could bring back P Jy Bond, LB Micah Johnson and CB Vince Anderson? None have been signed by another team as of today. LB Lee Campbell was signed by Detroit, so he's no longer an option.
