With the holiday season in full bloom, it appears Davis Webb got a present at Giants practice yesterday with some first-team reps. And, of course, the questions flowed from the media afterward about the rookie possibly seeing his first regular season action this year.
Well, Spags basically said don't hold your breathe as it was only a few reps, and Eli Manning is still the man for the final two games of the season. But the most intriguing thing to me was what Landon Collins and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie had to say after practice: They don't want the Giants spending their top pick on a quarterback because they feel Webb is the real deal.
Now, this could just be two teammates sticking up for another teammate. However, they way they explained themselves shows me they are serious. Rodgers-Cromartie went into detail about how hard Webb works, how he mimicks Manning when he's watching the first-team practice, and how he puts the ball where it needs to be when he gets to play under center.
The simple fact is Collins and Rodgers-Cromartie might be on to something here. What if Webb is the future of the franchise? He's obviously impressed veteran teammates, and if that's the case, the Giants won't have to look at a quarterback with their pick. They could take another offensive weapon in Penn State RB Saquon Barkley, or invest in the best lineman out of the draft like Notre Dame's Mike McGlinchey.
The real question, though, is will the Giants' new GM side with the team and want to stick with Webb? He hasn't seen the field all season, and being that this new guy hasn't been around the Giants all season, it will be hard for him to take that risk.
Time will tell, but Collins and DRC could be advocates down the road for Webb, who they think can take the reins from Manning one day.
