With the Giants offcially out of playoff contention and officially with nothing to play for than it's future, I need to see a new quarterback under center.
Fans and experts alike have been calling for Eli Manning to take a seat all season long, but now more than ever it needs to happen. As the weeks go by, Davis Webb and even Geno Smith are sitting on the bench staring into space, hoping they hear their names called on. The main question that comes to mind, though, is will playing one of these backups do the Giants any good?
First of all, I know everyone is calling for Webb, but don't write of Smith. He has had a bad wrap since his rookie season, and he still possesses the skills to get the job done -- that is if he's given the chance. This guy's numbers at the start of his career are simliar to many quarterbacks, including future Hall of Famer Drew Brees. The Giants could see what they can look like with an elusive quarterback that can also work in the pocket.
But will there be a clean pocket? And if so, will there be receivers who created separation to throw to? The Thanksgiving game wasn't just on Manning, but it should be noted that he had no one to throw to unless he wanted to risk an interception on every pass. Putting Smith or Webb in may not do them any good if they don't have any weapons around them to work with. Just ask Smith who had Jeremy Kerley as his No. 1 wide receiver for the first two years of his career with the Jets.
However, looking past all of that, the youngsters are on the field everywhere else but the quarterback position. Unless the Giants are letting Eli pad his career stats, it's time to change who's under center too.
