I"m sure, like me, all of you woke up hoping that the news of Smith starting over Manning Sunday was some sick nightmare, but realized this is what the Giants season has come to. I know the anger and frustration that has boiled over Big Blue Nation, but I'm going to stir the pot a little more by saying the move to bench Manning needed to happen sooner than later.
Before you starting cursing at me or DM me on Twitter, know that I am not supporting how this decision was made. Your franchise quarterback has given you everything he has since 2004, and that resulted in two Super Bowl rings, broken franchise records, and it was all done with class. John Mara, Jerry Reese, Ben McAdoo, and maybe the Pope should have been in one room to break the news to Eli. It was disrespectful and cowardly to do it in this fashion. That is unacceptable.
But, at the age of 37 and the Giants in full tank mode, a look at the future needed to happen right now. This is where I support the why behind the decision. We can debate about Smith over Davis Webb for hours (I know most of you -- if not all -- wanted to see Webb under center), but the point is that to look at the future, there was no easy way of sitting Manning. The fanbase has been calling for a change at quarterback since it was realized this team was going nowhere, and with an assumed top pick in a quarterback-heavy draft, you all wanted to see if Webb (not necessarily Smith) had what it took to succeed Manning before we got there.
There is no easy way about transitioning toward the potential future. The Giants made it harder on themselves by the way they conducted it with a beloved quarterback that is likely a future Hall of Famer. But, if you don't want the Giants to screw up a top pick and virtually place the team in the rut they are currently in for years to come, it was time for Manning to take a seat.
