Sports Illustrated released it's first mock draft, and placed teams based on if the season would end today. The Giants would have the No. 3 slot secured, and would select UCLA's QB Josh Rosen with their pick.
I'm here to tell you, John Mara and company, that would be a bad pick.
If I was selecting third overall in this year's draft, I would try to strike a deal with the 49ers to get the No. 2 slot for Penn State's Saquon Barkley. The Giants are in desperate need of a dynamic running back they haven't had in...well, forever. But let's just say they are set on taking a quarterback with their first round pick. They want someone Eli Manning can groom, and hand over his duties to once he decides to walk off into the sunset.
If that's the case, here's my bold move: Trade the No. 3 pick, move down on the draft board after getting an extra pick or two, and select Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield.
The senior Mayfield is having a much better season than Rosen. He has thrown for 3,226 yards with 28 touchdowns and five interceptions while owning a 71.7 completion percentage as well. Rosen, on the other hand, has thrown for 2,713 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His completion percentage is also lower at 63.1.
Rosen has been noted for being cocky and needing some time to mature. While Mayfield is no saint, his cockiness is backed up by his play on the field. He's having the best year of his career with his No. 5 ranked Sooners at the moment, and he has all the qualities of a franchise quarterback. And he would come onto the Giants already having chemistry with one of his top receivers two season ago in WR Sterling Shepard.
This move is all subject to change as Mayfield's name has been creeping up the ranks as the weeks go by. But if this pans out, the Giants would be getting a potential franchise quarterback while acquiring extra picks to spend on whatever they want (*cough* offensive line *cough*).
