The Giants hung tough today, but mistakes put them in too big a hole to overcome this time around. QB Eli Manning appeared to be on the verge of another 4th quarter miracle, but the comeback was not meant to be.
They fell to the now 8-1 San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park, 27-20.
The Blue dropped to 6-3 and their lead in the NFC East has whittled down to one game by virtue of Dallas' 44-7 flattening of Buffalo earlier today.
Manning completed his first 10 passes to open the game. He was 26-40 for 311 yards and tossed two TDs this afternoon, but it is his interceptions (both to CB Carlos Rogers) and the batted pass by DL Justin Smith on 4 and 2 from the 49ers' 10 with less than a minute remaining that will stick with him this week.
WR Victor Cruz had another productive game (6 catches for 84 yards) and Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, who were both questionable for today, each had a TD catch.
The Giants came into the game looking to stop the Niners' running game, and for the most part, did. San Francisco only had 77 net yards rushing and four first downs on the ground. RB Frank Gore carried six times for no yards. He sat most of the game with knee and ankle ailments.
LB Michael Boley left the game with a hamstring injury. He was replaced by rookies Spencer Paysinger and Jacquian Williams.
Next week, the Giants will host the 3-6 Philadelphia Eagles, who lost at home to the sorry Arizona Cardinals today.
NotesThe Giants won the time of possession battle (34:37 - 25:23) but still lost the game. They were held to two FGs on two long drives in the first half and ended the game deep in SF territory.
New York went 7-14 on 3rd downs and 2-3 on fourth down. The Niners were 3-11 on third downs and did not attempt a fourth down conversion.
Corey Webster had another INT; Osi Umenyiora and Linval Joseph had sacks for the Giants. Safeties Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips each had 5 tackles.
San Fran's dynamic LB duo of Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman had strong games again. Bowman had 14 total tackles while Willis had 11.
CB Prince Amukamara (foot) was inactive again today. Cruz was in for Aaron Ross at PR. RB Da'Rel Scott returned kicks. Ross apparently left the game with a leg contusion.
