Whether there is football or not the New York Giants have some house keeping to take care of. Pay Barry Cofield.
On a defensive line that was one of the most dominating in the NFL in 2010, how could the New York Giant not pay Barry Cofield? Cofield is a very intelligent player from Northwestern University and has made a solid contribution to this team since being drafted in 2006.
Barry is a very hard worker and won the starting nose tackle position in his first season. He was the first Giants rookie defensive player to start every game since linebacker Lawrence Taylor in 1981.
In 5 seasons he has played in every game except one. In a very physical game I would call that damn durable for player smashing faces with some of the best offensive lineman in football. This past season Cofield had his finest season with his highest numbers of tackles(54), sacks(4) and passes defended(4)in his career.
Bottom line...the guy holds down the fort and lets the superstars(Tuck & Umenyiora) do there job and get all the glory(deserved).
Unselfish...a key ingredient in the players the Giants claim to love and it has always been said that unselfish, hard-nose play is the cornerstone of New York Giants football. So, why doesn't this guy have a deal? Are the Giants brass really thinking of letting this guy go to save a few bucks?
Big Blue still does not have an impact linebacker, Osi will be coming off hip surgery and who knows what the future holds for Mathias Kiwanuka, so what sense does it make not to pay one of the most consistent lineman the Giants have had since Keith Hamilton.
If anyone thinks that the Giants line is the same with Rocky Bernard or rookie Linval Joseph they are kidding themselves. Barry Cofield deserves a new paycheck from the NY Giants, especially in a league of over-paid, over-hyped players that don't produce.
Cofield is going to have a routine scope on his shoulder and will be ready to play in 2011. Let's just hope for the New York Giants.
