The Indianapolis Colts were slated all along to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick, so the trade now signified that the Redskins would take Baylor quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.
That’s exactly how it played out, and Griffin III is off to a fast start in his NFL career.
Griffin III is the type of player that can give the Giants fits over the next decade. He’s only 22 years old, and unlike some other rookie quarterbacks, his intellect for the game and willingness to learn is off the charts.
Not only has he torched opposing defenses with his powerful arm, but he’s also arguably the fastest quarterback in the game, as exhibited by his 76-yard touchdown run Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
He was a track star as well as a quarterback at Baylor, and he certainly hasn’t lost this great speed.
The Giants have an affinity for getting burned by mobile quarterbacks, which is strange since the Giants usually have the fastest defensive ends in football. They struggle with outside contain, allowing the opposing quarterback to escape around the end for big gains.
Just look at how the Giants have fared against Michael Vick. Vick owns a 5-1 career record as a starter against Big Blue, including two 100-plus-yard rushing games.
But just like Vick, Griffin III’s style of play exposes him to an increased risk of injury. He’s not afraid to take a big hit while trying to get the extra yard, but it could cost him down the road. He suffered a concussion in a Week 5 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, but he was able to recover in time to earn the win against the Vikings.
For the Giants, it will be all about containment. Big Blue needs to secure the outside running lanes to prevent Griffin III from breaking free. It’s much more difficult for a quarterback to scramble up the middle than around the outside.
If he stays healthy, Griffin III is going to be a fun player to watch. He’s already brought about major changes to the Redskins’ franchise to the point where there is once again hope in our nation’s capital.
We could be seeing the start of a long and prosperous career for RGIII. Let’s just hope he takes it easy on the Giants.
