With three years before he hits the free agent market, Giants general manager Jerry Reese is considering new ways to use to use Thomas, including moving him to safety.
"Terrell obviously has the multiple knee surgeries so he will have to tread lightly on that and see where he is physically," Reese said on Thursday during an interview on WFAN. "Right now, he is still rehabbing. We will definitely reach out to him and see where he is and see if he is going to be able to try to make another comeback."
Reese suggests moving to safety would help Thomas stay healthy, considering his history of ACL injuries.
It's an interesting move, considering Thomas would likely remain a reserve. Should he switch to safety, he could be a valuable backup defensive back because of his versatility.
Both safeties Stevie Brown and Kenny Phillips are free agents this off-season, and Reese will have to decide which player will be the the starter opposite Antrel Rolle. Reserve Will Hill is under contract through 2014.
At cornerback, Corey Webster, Prince Amukamara and Jayron Hosley are all under contract, with Webster set to become a free agent in '14, Amukamara in '15 and Josley in '16. Backup Justin Tyron is a free agent this winter.
