It's a whole ballgame out at QDTC these days when it comes to practicing during the regular season. A normal week used to be practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but no more. Thursday's workouts are longer and Fridays will be dedicated "recovery" days.
"It’s what we call a GPS week. We’re going to follow through with that," coach Tom Coughlin told reporters Thursday. "We did that for our third preseason game, and we’ll do it here, too. (Friday) will be a recovery day. This will be a much longer practice. This will be a 23-mod practice today."
Saturday used to be a walkthrough, which Coughlin believes may have taken some edge off before game days. He's decided to try something different.
"Saturday changes. . .(It) becomes a full-speed drill for a minimum amount of time," he said." But it does put them in the mode where they’ve gone full speed the day before they play."
Speaking of players getting ready to play, WR Victor Cruz likely won't against Dallas, although Coughlin is not ruling him out. MLB Jon Beason "moved around OK" on Wednesday but sat on Thursday.
"I’m doing just OK," Beason said. "Wednesday was basically to gauge where I was full speed and see how I felt. Obviously we were in pads, tackling, and changing directions. Felt pretty good. It’s just, see how it feels the next day, and so it’s a little sore, so the smartest thing to do is to take a day off and see how it feels tomorrow."
But will he play Sunday?
"That’s the plan," Beason said. "That’s the plan. Trust me, I don’t want to miss Dallas, Sunday Night Football, the opener, so for me personally, it means everything."
If Beason cannot go, the Giants do not have a solid Plan B. Rookie Uani' Unga and/or newly signed Jasper Brinkley will be called upon.
In other injury news, DE Owa Odighizuwa (foot) did not practice but DL Cullen Jenkins (hamstring) and LB Jonathan Casillas (neck) practiced fully.
Many questions still remain as the opener nears, such as who is taking charge of the defense. Last season, Antrel Rolle's voice trumped all others, but he's gone now.
"There are different people, there are different people that have done it from day one," said Coughlin. "You’ve had Jon Beason, you’ve had Cullen Jenkins>. In the secondary, some of the corners have come in with positive comments from time to time. So there’s different guys that have stepped up. (Jon) Hankins has been in that position. So different people."
The offensive line is revamped again, and Coughlin is just tired of answering the questions. He's ready to let their play do the talking...
"As I went through (Wednesday), I think that we’re ready to start the season. I think we’ll steadily improve throughout the season. I think that they’ll come together even more as they have an opportunity to compete and communicate under game circumstances."
The Giants signed former Packers WR Myles White to the practice squad and released LB Cole Farrand. White played in all four preseason games for Green Bay. He led the team with 16 receptions for 157 yards and two touchdown. White had nine catches vs. Philadelphia on Aug. 20, and scored two touchdowns against New Orleans in the finale.
