This morning head coach Tom Coughlin shed some light on the plan for Nassib this season. Below are comments from the Giants' beat pool via Twitter:
[sny-box]Tom Rock @TomRock_Newsday: TC very high on Nassib, but doesn't rule out keeping 3 QBs again.
Bart Hubbuch @HubbuchNYP: Coughlin on Ryan Nassib: "I think he’s going to be a good player. This is going to be an important year for him and for the Giants."
Patricia Traina @Patricia_Traina: That last comment from Coughlin re: keeping 3 QBs doesn't surprise me given the coaches never even thought to activate Nassib last year. That suggests to me the kid didn't make much progress. Not really sure how the Giants can justify keeping 3 QBs again this year but I suspect they might not have much of a choice unless Nassib REALLY shows major progress.[/sny-box]
Eli Manning is going to be the Giants' starter unless something unforeseen occurs between now and September. Let's hope nothing happens. Curtis Painter was re-signed to be the primary backup. That is, if he can hold off Nassib, who we have yet to see play any meaningful downs in the pros.
The way Coughlin was speaking today, the Giants will throw Nassib to the lions this summer. Throw him against the wall and see what sticks. Nassib will have to show that he's made progress this August in order for the Giants to have more clarity on the future of the QB position....and don't forget, Jerry Reese has not ruled out taking another QB in the draft.
