I've been getting buried with emails and texts wanting to know my opinion on the Giants' upcoming season. Here are three...
Eli hasn't looked so sharp, yet the media continues to predict big things from him this year. What am I missing?
You're not missing anything, Eli is. He is without Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle and seems to have lost the synergy he had with Odell Beckham, Jr. last season. All of that will be resolved in short order, however. He also has to shore up the short passing game, especially to the backs. So, yes he has been a bit off, but that offense has too many good players to misfire for much longer.
What players do you see surprising for the Giants in 2015?
Well, on defense, it's hard to tell because many of the players I've been targeting have gotten injured. But some players that have looked good are DE Owa Odighizuwa, CB Trevin Wade and LB Uani Unga. LB JT Thomas had a nice game against his old team, the Jaguars, last week. I would like to see more of UDFA LB Cole Farrand, and the way things are going, I may get my wish.
On offense, UDFA RB Akeem Hunt is making his mark both on offense and special teams. So are RB Orleans Darkwa and HB Nikita Whitlock. TE Jerome Cunningham is also a guy who can help. If they cut him in favor of super bust Adrien Robinson, I have no answer for that. You can bang on Jerry Reese all you want, but he's been pretty good in the FA market. He signed two seasoned pros in RB Shane Vereen and WR James Jones. that instantly make this offense deeper and better.
Is this it for Tom Coughlin if the Giants fail to qualify for the postseason?
Ownership is committed to Tom (for the short term, anyway) but the objective here is to win. A losing or non-playoff year will certainly force management to consider a change. Then again, depending on how the season unrolls, Coughlin himself may step aside. Personally, I don't see Tom falling on his sword, but the run has to end sometime.
