from Randy Rosetta / Baton Rouge AdvocateFormer LSU two-sports star Chad Jones is in surgery at LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans and in guarded condition after an early-morning car accident.
Jones' father, Al Jones, said his 21-year-old son went into surgery about 10:15 a.m. for a broken left leg in the femur area. Al Jones said doctors are concerned about blood flow to the lower leg.
Various media outlets are reporting that arteries and nerves were exposed in the accident.
"We're strong and we're praying," said Al Jones, the principal at Cohen High in New Orleans. His family moved to Baton Rouge for three years from New Orleans in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. "This is the call you never want to get as a parent. I'm used to making those phone calls and now we've received one. It's heartbreaking."
Chad Jones returned to New Orleans earlier this week after an organized team activity (OTA) with the New York Giants, who drafted him in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft in April.
Al Jones said his son was alert after the accident.
"My understanding is that he was awake and he actually gave my cell phone to the police officer who was talking to him," Jones said.
New Orleans Emergency Service spokesman Jeb Tate said a victim matching Chad Jones's description was taken to the Trauma Center at LSU Public Hospital in guarded condition.
"We use guarded to denote a condition between critical and stable."
At this time Jones is still believed to be in surgery. Doctors have not confirmed anything regarding Jones' condition as previously reported, and also have not ruled out amputation.
