The Giants held their first practice of training camp on Tuesday with 89 of the 90 players on the roster participating in half-shells. Only MLB Jon Beason, who is on the PUP list while he recovers from a foot injury, was not on the field.
"Some of it was disappointing in terms of the conditioning part," head coach Tom Coughlin said, when asked his impression of the first day of camp. "There were two or three guys (actually, four: OL Brandon Mosley, TE Xavier Grimble, OT Charles Brown and LB Spencer Adkins to be exact) I thought relatively early in practice came up with cramps, and had to be taken inside."
"Organizationally, it was fine," the coach continued. "The execution was not as good as you would like it to be. The defense, I thought, moved around well. On offense there were a few things that were very close that I am excited to look at on the tape. You always want to come back right where you left off, and it never is quite that, but we got out here and some things happen sometimes and you get to look at other people and it’s to the benefit of the team. I’m hoping that is what we are going to find when we look at the tape."
Veteran safety Antrel Rolle had a different view.
"It’s almost to a point where you have to hold yourself back," he said. "It’s just the first day of training camp. All of the guys are excited and were trying to get out there and see what we can put together. It’s going to be a very stressful week that we have here."
LB Jameel McClain, playing the middle in place of Beason, also left the field but with an apparent foot injury. The extent of that injury will be known today. Mark Herzlich stepped in and handled the remainder of the MLB reps after McClain's departure.
The team will be out on the field again this afternoon at 1:20. Rain is not expected until later in the day, so they'll be outside in the heat again.
