Well, there is a myth that great running backs can be found in the later rounds and while there has been some great backs drafted in rounds four through seven...I wouldn't say that drafting a back in the later rounds has proven reliable. Especially when you look at multi-year starting running backs in the NFL over the last 10 years
Yes, there has been some great backs like Terrell Davis, Michael Turner, Chester Taylor, Peyton Hillis, Leon Washington, Justin Forsett and Marion Barber all drafted in later rounds. The New York Giants even made a little back from Marshall named Ahmad Bradshaw a household name.
So who is Da'Rel Scott? The 5' 11" 200 lb Maryland running back is the New York Giants 7th round draft pick and if seeing what Bradshaw has done since 2007, I would think the Terps running back is more than ready for the lock out to end. Does Scott have a chance of making this team?
Of course he does!
The Giants have excelled over the last twenty five years utilizing the power, speed, shiftiness, and patience of the smaller back. There was Joe Morris, Dave Meggett, Tiki Barber and now Ahmad Bradshaw. Da'Rel also returned kicks for Maryland which will clearly mean the end of employment in Big Blue for one Darius Reynard.
On Notice: DJ Ware & Ahmad Bradshaw
Da'Rel is known for his 4.34 speed and is an excellent back who gets to the outside quickly. His explosiveness will clearly be an upgrade with the ever disappearing Brandon Jacobs and the often injured Ahmad Bradshaw. His skills as a third down back and catching passes out of the backfield can make an immediate impact, especially when looking at 2010 receiving stats for the running back position.
He won't be wearing No. 23 for the NY Giants, but whatever jersey he is wearing it will be a breath of fresh air to see him on the field.
