Glen Sather Glen Sather Job/Future

Rangers assistant GM Jeff Gorton spoke with the media yesterday following the draft which is something that Rangers GM Glen Sather normally does.

In early June Sather confirmed that he was undecided about whether he would continue on in his role as GM.

Larry Brooks wrote on Sunday that it would have been nice of Sather to provide some clarity on both his future as well as the future of the team. (NY Post)

I don't think Slats gets pushed out, but he is going to be 73 or something in September and his time has come and gone and there is considerable interest in Jeff Gorton and it's his time and opportunity and the Rangers might follow what Lou and the Devils did with Ray Shero."

On Sportsnet, Nick Kypreos spoke about Glen Sather's future.

Kypreos said, "there isn't much talk of Glen Sather and the Rangers moving forward, there is some talk about Bryan Murray getting an extension in Ottawa but how about the other 70 year old in New York. There is a lot of talk about whether he wants to go into next season as the general manager or will he relinquish some of that power. So yea, there is some speculation about some changes coming to New York."

Kypreos said last May that Sather wasn't going anywhere.

On Monday, James Murphy of ESPN Boston reported that Glen Sather was considering a move where he would leave the GM position but stay on as President.

The idea was shot down by Rangers reporters, but Murphy said on Sportsnet radio yesterday, "I've been working on this for about the last two weeks. Sources very close to Glen Sather have told me that he is seriously considering this. He said before that he wouldn't but things change and I think that obviously his health issues are playing a major role in that and he needs to step back from the stress that the GM job brings.

You have to look at the guys who are there, I was told Risebrough and Schoenfeld would be in the running. They have earned their stripes and Schoenfeld has been there for a while. What has surprised me is that Jeff Gorton's name wasn't mentioned to me, he was the guy who took over the reins as Sather went through his surgery and recovery. I would imagine he wouldn't feel too good if he got passed up on that but we will see what happens. Right now it is just a consideration, it isn't a done deal by any means but he is seriously contemplating this."

  • Nothing has changed in two weeks since Sather announced intention to remain as GM during conference call with media.
9:20AMJames Murphy, of ESPN Boston, wrote on his personal website that an NHL source as well as a Rangers team source is telling him that Rangers GM Glen Sather is considering stepping down from that position and letting someone else take over the player personnel decisions.

Murphy says that Sather would retain his role as President of the organization and would appoint either Jim Schoenfeld, Assistant General Manager, Player Personnel, or Doug Risebrough, "Hockey consultant", to take over as GM.

On the conference call to discuss the John Tortorella firing, Glen Sather said that he is staying on in his role of General Manager for this season.

Sather is President and GM of the Rangers and some have speculated that he may step down as GM, remain as President, and allow Jeff Gorton to become GM.

Earlier today, Nick Kypreos said on Sportsnet radio yesterday that no one should be holding their breath for the end of Glen Sather, "there is a relationship with the owner there that I am sure has many people baffled. It has never been an option for that owner to get Slats out and as long as he still wants the job and takes home a hefty paycheck....he will stay. There is no sense of "my time has come and I will pass the torch" none of that. He is the lowest key GM. Hardly any interviews. It's not his thing now. He is beyond needing to go on air on a semi-regular basis."
