Todd Decker is the new head basketball coach at St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City.

Decker, 32, takes over for Mike Kelly, who spent five years at the parochial powerhouse before being promoted to captain in the Jersey City Police Department.

"The idea was we want to build Oak Hill West," Trousdale, a former college coach, said in a phone interview.

Trousdale went so far as to spend a week visiting Oak Hill, the Mouth of Wilson, Va., school that has produced 26 McDonald's All-Americans and perennially challenges for the No. 1 national ranking under head coach Steve Smith.

There is the travel cross country, often just for a single game. There is increased media coverage, including magazines and Web sites devoted entirely to their sport. And don't forget about the frequent appearances on TV, both locally and nationally.

High school basketball has been mimicking the pro game for years, but the latest example may be a bit more troubling than a concern about too-much, too-soon.

Top-level players not only are transferring schools, but they are doing it during the season. And since there is not a national governing body to oversee the moves - not to mention determine eligibility - there often is turmoil on both ends of the moves, especially when a player goes back to a public school after time at a high-profile institution.

NEW YORK ? When Kenny Jones first appeared at practice at Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn last month, he was overcome with emotion.

"When I first walked back in the gym, they all stopped practicing and ran over to me," Jones recalled. "All the guys on the team, even some of the new guys who I never really met, told me how happy they were that I was back. I was overwhelmed by that. This whole ordeal has been pretty emotional to me."

Both Jones and former Jefferson assistant Tyrone Davis were shot in separate incidents in October. Davis, 52, lost his life, while Jones, 48, spent "three long, grueling" months in the hospital rehabilitating.

NEWARK, N.J. ? Dan Hurley says having his St. Benedict's players compete on national TV will prepare them for college in more ways than one.

In addition to the competition the Gray Bees will get in Monday's game against Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler High in the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass., Hurley says he feels there's an added benefit, too.

"It's good exposure for the kids," said Hurley, whose undefeated team is ranked No. 4 in the RivalsHigh 100. "They're going from playing normal high school games, which could end in an hour 10 or an hour and 20 minutes, to having to do TV timeouts on the floor. It's more similar to what they'll experience in college."
