Barclays Center will host two of the winningest programs in college basketball history when Kentucky and St. John's join LIU Brooklyn and Hofstra for the BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival on Sunday, December 11. In the doubleheader matchup, Kentucky, whose 2016-17 recruiting class is ranked No. 1 by ESPN, will play Hofstra, and LIU Brooklyn will take on St. John's, which also welcomes a nationally-ranked group of newcomers next season.

NEW YORK - Hofstra led by three late in the second half when Juan'ya Green drove to the right side of the basket. With two defenders closing in, Green threw a miraculous behind the head pass to an open Rokas Gustys who dunked it for two points, erupting the crowd at Madison Square Garden.

The 6-foot-2 Green managed to do it all on Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra went on to defeat Appalachian State, 86-80, at Madison Square Garden behind Green's 17 points, six assists, five rebounds four steals and one block. The Pride (6-2) won their third straight.

Hofstra coach Joe Mihalich has twin boys in their mid-20s, so he knows a little something about how twins communicate.

And while Hofstra juniors Ameen Tanksley and Juan'ya Green are not twins, they?remind the coach of his sons.

Hofstra scored a shooting?guard Wednesday night when they got a commitment from Justin Wright-Foreman, a 6-foot-1, 173-pound scorer?from Queens Construction High School.

Playing for the New York Rens, Wright-Foreman dropped 48 points on the Ohio Basketball Club in the adidas Super 64 in Las Vegas and was the second leading scorer in the event.

He also considered Manhattan, Iona, Fairfield and Kent State, among others.

Malik Nichols has signed a National Letter of Intent with Hofstra and?will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-6, 210-pound Nichols initially committed to former Hofstra coach Mo Cassara in November 2010 but was academically ineligible. He then went to Bridgton Academy (ME) before ending up at South Plains College in Levelland, TX.

Andre Walker, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound power forward from Clarksburg (Md.) Bullis, committed to Hofstra on Saturday, giving coach Joe Mihalich a quality shot-blocker beginning in 2014.

He also considered Towson, George Mason, George Washington, James Madison, La Salle and others.

Joe Mihalich's first order of business after officially getting the Hofstra job on Tuesday was to help rebuild the roster through recruiting.

The Iona coach has recommitted to coaching the Gaels for at least the next five years, the school announced.

Fleming has scored at least 20 points five times this year, including a 33-point outing against South Brunswick. He also put 29 on Woodbridge.

Coombs-McDaniel's future remains in doubt because of his knee situation.

The 6-foot-7 forward hasn't played since the 2010-11 season when he helped UConn win the national championship under then-coach Jim Calhoun. He averaged 4.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in his two-year career at UConn before transferring to Hofstra and sitting out last season.

Four Hofstra basketball players were arrested Thursday evening and charged with multiple counts of second-degree burglary in connection with a string of dorm-room burglaries at the Long Island university.

According to police and media reports, sophomore transfer and former Lincoln High School star?Shaquille Stokes?and freshmen?Jimmy Hall, Kentrell Washington?and?Dallas Anglin?stole more than an estimated $20,000 worth of ?iPads, iPods and laptops from six unlocked dorm rooms between Oct. 4 and Nov. 5. Some of the stolen items were sold on Craiglist and other locations.

Shaq Stokes left the University of Hawaii to be closer to his ill grandmother and on Friday he chose his new school.

The former Lincoln High point guard will suit up at Hofstra and hopes to secure a hardship waiver to play in the 2012-13 season. He will have three years once he becomes eligible.

"It felt like the best situation for me," the 5-foot-11, 172-pound Stokes told SNY.tv. "My family loved the visit. The coaches are an unbelievable coaching staff with great fire and passion to change the program around. It felt like Lincoln all over again walking through the doors."

Hathaway is the latest person with UConn ties to land at Hosftra. Former Hofstra AD Jack Hayes, now the AD at Brown, worked for Hathaway at UConn. Assistant basketball coach Pat Sellers was an assistant at UConn under Jim Calhoun. And former UConn guard Jamal Coombs-McDaniel transferred to Hofstra and will be eligible this year.

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Looking out into a banquet room full of people Tuesday night at the Westchester Marriott, Charles Jenkins asked that his 11-year-old niece, Kemoni Albritton, stand and be recognized.

"I want her to stand up so everybody can see the pretty dress she's wearing tonight," Jenkins, honored as only the third three-time winner of the Haggerty Award, told the crowd in what was perhaps the most touching moment of the night.

Kareem Albritton, Jenkins' older brother and Kemoni's father, was shot and killed in Brooklyn in 2001. Ever since, Jenkins' parents, Charles and Patricia, have helped raise the girl.

Jenkins, a senior guard from Queens, N.Y., won for the third consecutive season, becoming only the third player in the history of the award to win it three times. The others were Jim McMillian of Columbia (1968-69-70) and Chris Mullin of St. John?s (1983-84-85).

While UConn star Kemba Walker has garnered national headlines for his scoring exploits this season, one player who has flown under the radar is Hofstra senior guard Charles Jenkins.

The 6-foot-3 Queens, N.Y. native averaged 25.0 points and 6.3 assists in three Hofstra wins last week, and shared the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week honor with Frank Hassell of Old Dominion.

Hofstra announced Friday that new head coach Mo Cassara has a four-year contract.

"Mo Cassara was named our head men's basketball coach on May 5 of this year," Hofstra AD Jack Hayes said in a statement.? "When his hire was released we announced that Coach Cassara had signed a multi-year agreement with the University.? To clarify, Coach Cassara has a four-year contract and we are excited about the program that Mo is developing.? Hofstra University looks forward to a successful 2010-11 campaign and many more in the future with Mo Cassara as our head coach."

Hofstra opens the season Saturday at home against Division 3 Farmingdale State.

One of the most exciting point guards in the New York area is Tavon Sledge of Half Hollow Hills West on Long Island.

Though he is undersized, Sledge is tremendously quick, fierce and athletic.

When Hills West downed JayVaughn Pinkston and Bishop Loughlin last January, Sledge dropped 21 points in a 75-72 victory.

Crump, who also considered Rutgers and Seton Hall, averaged 0.4 points and 0.3 rebounds in 16 games as a reserve forward at Baylor last season. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

When 6-foot-8 rising senior forward Tyler Harris takes an unofficial visit Thursday to Rutgers, he will be the latest in a list of high-profile recruits to check out the campus in recent weeks.

Consider that in the last two weeks, Mike Rice's staff has brought in Naadir Tharpe, Jordan Goodman, Jaron Sina, Tyrone Johnson, Myles Mack, Derrick Randall and Kadeem Jack on visits. Baylor transfer Givon Crump also came to Piscataway.

The 6-8 Goodman, considered one of the top players in the Class of 2012, ended up committing after his visit.

NEW YORK -- Desmond Hubert is a long way from cutting his list of schools, but he says two should make his top five.

"'Nova and Pitt," the 6-foot-9, 205-pound Hubert said Friday night at the Rumble in the Bronx at Fordham. "Great programs, I like the head coaches."

As for Villanova, Hubert said he liked head coach Jay Wright and the whole program.

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind for Hofstra head coach Mo Cassara and his program.

On March 30, he lost his job as an assistant at Boston College when head coach Al Skinner was fired.

Cassara was supposed to come aboard Tim Welsh's staff at Hofstra but was without a signed contract when Welsh was charged with a DWI and then forced to resign May 3.

Chaz Williams, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound freshman point guard from Brooklyn, has gotten his release from Hofstra and will transfer.

"I made it official. I got my release," he said Wednesday.

Providence, Rutgers and La Salle are possible destinations for Williams, who averaged 9.8 points and 4.2 rebounds last season for the Pride.

Two days after Tim Welsh resigned at Hofstra in the wake of a DWI charge, the school named Mo Cassara its new head coach.

Cassara, a former Welsh assistant, has agreed to a multi-year deal with the University.

Cassara will keep assistants Steve DeMeo and Allen Griffin on staff and Kyle Steinway, who worked with DeMeo at Newberry College (S.C.), will become the Director of Basketball Operations, according to a source close to the program. That leaves one assistant coaching opening on staff.

Kadeem Jack is headed to South Kent, a prep school in Connecticut, for a year before going on to college.

"I spoke to Kadeem Jack last [Monday] night and he gave me every indication that he will be attending South Kent next year," South Kent coach Kelvin Jefferson said Tuesday.

Jack himself texted various Arizona media outlets with the same news.

Hofstra coach Tim Welsh has resigned before ever coaching a single game at the school.

"Tim Welsh today tendered his resignation as the Hofstra University men's basketball coach.? The University accepted the resignation in the best interests of the University and of the men's basketball program," read a release from the school.

The former Providence and Iona coach was suspended indefinitely without pay Friday after Nassau County police found him asleep at the wheel early Friday morning and charged him with DWI.
