Huskies

Earlier this month the UConn men won the national championship.

By the end of the month, we'll know who they will have to get back there.

The Huskies' roster remains in flux with NBA, transfers and graduation losses making a big unknown as to who actually will be on the roster.

We all know that Florida hasn't lost since Dec. 2, 30 games in a row. We also know who beat them, UConn on a last second shot by Napier.

A lot has changed in college basketball since that day and there are a lot of differences on the UConn team than the one who beat Florida.

From the marked improvement of Amida Brimah as a shot blocker, to the much-improved rebounding of the Huskies as a team to major turnover in rotations, the Huskies are a lot different than they were Dec. 2.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino did the soft politic on Saturday night. After winning the American Athletic Conference with a 71-61 win over UConn, Pitino gave an opinion on where the Cardinals should be. ?

He said he thinks Louisville would be a one seed. Certainly, it plays like one seed, and then said he doesn't politic. Which was an incredible bit of politicking in itself.

?We?ll probably be a one seed,? Pitino told ESPN's Andy Katz postgame.

UConn hosts No. 11 Cincinnati at noon at the XL, and next week are at No. 7 Louisville with a game against Rutgers in between.

UConn needed to get out of Dodge, or Storrs, or whatever metaphor you would like.

The loss to Southern Methodist was the kind of defeat that rocks a team to its core. The Huskies didn't have any effort issues, and there wasn't a glaring weakness that shown through, rather what happened against the Mustangs in the loss was disturbing.

UConn allowed SMU to take them out of its game, make the Huskies inpatient and make them make poor decisions.

STORRS, Conn. -- There is only way to beat a defense like SMU puts out there. ?The Mustangs are big, atletic and play physical and under Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown have heavy preparation coming into games.

STORRS, Conn. -- SMU is a bad matchup for the Huskies.

They are thick, strong and athletic and like to play a physical game. SMU plays in your face defense and leans on its opponents.

If there is one weakness of UConn, it's thickness and strength and the Huskies are ill-equipped to get in physical slow down game.

HARTFORD, Conn. --UConn head coach Kevin Ollie wanted his team to bring their locks to the game against South Florida. ?

The Bulls were a team that attacks the paint. USF scored 40 points in the paint against Rutgers, 54 against UCF, 28 against Cincinnati and 40 in a shocking win over SMU.

The Bulls attack the rim. That's their style.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Shabazz Napier scored seven points, four assists and five rebounds, Ryan Boatright had nine points and four assists against South Florida on Wednesday. ?

Those weren't subpar games for the Huskies' top two players. ?The didn't need Napier or Boatright on Wednesday night at all. ?A couple of guys off the street could have taken out USF. UConn hammered a listless USF team 83-40 jumping on the Bulls in the first four minutes and putting the game away 10 minutes in. DeAndre Daniels led the Huskies with 12 points. Freshman Kentan Facey was the only other play in double figures with 10 points.

How bad was it for USF (12-13, 3-9)?

The UConn men's basketball team is becoming one of the great road draws in the American Athletic Conference.

Every conference game UConn has played on the road, it's been a season-high in crowd, even Houston's 4035 on New Year's Eve was a season high. There were sell-outs at SMU, a 19,000 plus crowd at Memphis and then today's game against Rutgers, a sell-out and black court at the RAC in the final meeting as conference mates.

Rutgers hasn't sold out the RAC in two years, but with the Huskies coming the final time it's going to be a packed arena in one of the better college venues in the Northeast.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- There is snow in Connecticut that kept many away, it appears one of the no shows is the Temple defense.

UConn, coming off a loss to Louisville on Saturday, leads 48-34 at the half against a disinterested Temple team shooting 59.2 percent from the floor.

Shabazz Napier has 15 points, before he left with two fouls. DeAndre Daniels has 10 for the Huskies, who are getting any shot it wants and show no signs of slowing down against a struggling Owls team. ?Eight UConn plays scored a point in the first half and the Huskies were 7 of 14 from 3-point range.

UConn hung on against Maryland. UConn escaped against BC and Indiana. That win over Harvard? The best player wasn't on the floor.

How about that great win over Florida? It was lucky, and the best player of Florida wasn't on the floor the last five minutes.

Yadda, Yadda, Yadda.?

DeAndre Daniels early in the second half, and Shabazz Napier late.

That's as good as any of a 1-2 punch for the UConn men's basketball.

Memphis, which has lost only 9 games at the FedEx Forum since the 2009 season, saw a different level of conference opponent in UConn in the inaugural American Athletic Conference matchup between the Tigers and Huskies.
