Guard?Iman Shumpert, gaining confidence as his surgically repaired left leg gets stronger, is ready to embrace the triangle offense new coach Derek Fisher and president Phil Jackson are bringing to the Knicks ?(ESPN, Aug. 26).

He's also cut down on his time on social media to block out the aggravation of the trade rumors that dogged him this summer.

In praising the triangle, ?Shumpert said he'll be able to do more in that offense than in the one used by ex-Knicks coach Mike Woodson, which stressed isolation. Shumpert, entering his fourth season, had career-low averages of 6.7 points and 37.8 shooting last season.

Rivalry Check is an ongoing series in which we preview 10 of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

New Faces: The Indiana Pacers didn't make too huge of a splash this offseason, only some minor tweaks here and there. The selected forward Solomon Hill out of Arizona with the No. 23 back in the NBA Draft. It was among one of the many unpredictable moves during this year's draft, with Hill being off many analyst's radar.

In need of a backup point guard, the Pacers signed C.J. Watson, formerly of the Brooklyn Nets. Last season, Watson averaged 6.8 points and 2 assists as Deron William's backup. The team also added Donald Sloan, who last year averaged 4.1 points and 1.9 assists with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Iman Shumpert has made it clear he plans to work on his offensive game this offseason. And in an interview with Marc Berman of the New York Post, he went even more in-depth.

Shumpert said he was too passive at times last season, not as aggressive as he was during his rookie campaign. And he plans to get back to that aggressive style this coming year.

"Sometimes I saw myself just catching the ball and not looking to do anything with it," he said. "My first year, every time I caught the ball, I was looking to do something with it. Whether it was the right decision, I don't know, but I was always aggressive.

New Faces:?There are plenty of new ?faces in the Raptors locker room, but they are pretty familiar to fans in New York. Toronto traded Andrea Bargnani to acquire 3-point specialist Steve Novak, veteran big man Marcus Camby, Quentin Richardson and a handful of draft picks, but only Novak remains on the roster.

The Raptors also brought in D.J. Augustin and Tyler Hansbrough -- no marquee moves but ones that add some depth to their young nucleus.

With all of the offseason additions, New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson is still unsure of which players he'll trot out as his starting five.

According to Woodson, only Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton are sure bets to crack the starting lineup, leaving the shooting guard and power forward positions open for competition.

At the 2, J.R. Smith will play starter minutes, but the reigning Sixth Man of the Year will probably continue to provide an offensive spark off the bench like he did in 2012.

Earlier this week, ESPN Insider projected J.R. Smith to be a top-10 shooting guard in 2013-14. Now, the site has shifted its focus onto the forwards.

Projecting the top 10 power forwards for the upcoming season, analyst Bradford Doolittle placed Carmelo Anthony in the No. 10 spot. According to Doolittle, Anthony's 11 WARP -- the first double-digit offensive efficiency total -- is combated by a poor defensive effort.

"His offensive efficiency spiked with his position shift, and his acceptance of the move," Doolitte wrote. "The downside of the tweak is Anthony's lack of defensive acumen. His defensive rebounding was fine when he was a 3, but one position over, it doesn't look too good. Anthony does, without a doubt, score a lot of points. Make of that what you will."

In an interview with HoopsWorld.com at the 2013 adidas Nations camp, New York Knicks guard/forward Iman Shumpert discussed an array of topics, ranging from his expectations entering his third year, the team's second-round exit in the playoffs and the hype surrounding the rest of the Eastern Conference.

Coach Mike Woodson wants to see Shumpert improve his offensive game this summer, and that's precisely what the third-year swingman is doing.

Though he left the Knicks Summer League early, Shumpert has made a habit of working on his shooting this offseason. Shumpert is also keeping in shape so he can be an asset on both offense and defense.

USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo announced earlier today that 27 players have accepted invitations to attend the 2013 Men?s National Team mini-camp next month in Las Vegas. The list includes young players like DeMar Derozan, Kemba Walker and Tyler Zeller, but not Iman Shumpert.

?This is an important opportunity for each one of them because we will be evaluating which players will continue to be involved in future USA National Team training camps and teams,? Colangelo said, according to USABasketball.com. Previous mini-camp attendees include Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Derrick Rose.

Shumpert is a second-year player out of Georgia Tech who was on the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2012. He tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee during a playoff game against the Heat last season, forcing him to miss the rest of the series and significant time this season.

Away from prying eyes, Stoudemire joined a handful of teammates at practice Thursday ? the first contact scrimmage since suffering a bulging disk in his lower back. "Yeah, it was some contact, some drill work," coach Mike Woodson said. "And he seemed to feel pretty good today so we?ll take it another step tomorrow and see where he is."
Meanwhile, Shumpert left the game after a serious roll of the ankle.?The word is that it's a sprain, which needs to be monitored. The key is to be as healthy as possible heading towards the playoffs.

Iman Shumpert admitted yesterday that Carmelo Anthony instills confidence in him. That's the leadership necessary for young player to develop and grow into a talented and productive NBA player on both ends of the floor.

We know what Shumpert brings off the bench and on the defensive end. We know what his limitations have been offensively. The last two games have showed that Shumpert has the ability to knock down open jumpers and play a two-man game with Melo in the post, a critical element to any successful playoff offense.

The NBA has taken a dramatic shift in position importance, the league was once solely dominated by the big men. From the days of George Mikan all the up way to the domination of Shaquille O'neal, now it seems that the court is owned by the smaller guys. Michael Jordan showed the world that a guard can completely control the outcome of games, that logic has resonated throughout the league until this day. Guards are faster, stronger, and more explosive than ever before. The reigning MVP last year is the new age point-guard, he can finish at the rim like no other before him, and he can completely control the tempo from the 1 spot. Now great point-guards are not a new thing, one of the greatest winners in NBA history was Magic Johnson, and he was PG. What we're talking about here is the "New Age" point-guards. The D-Rose's, Russ' Westbrooks, John Wall's, D-Will's of the NBA.

Most Knicks fans are already looking towards the next answer, could it be Steve Nash, or maybe Deron Willams, or maybe the Knicks have the answer already.

My agent, Happy Walters, is not pursuing any overseas options for me right now. He still is optimistic a settlement will be done and we?ll have a season because the players have relented so much. Happy told me it?s like the owners are up 25 points in the fourth quarter and leaving your starters in because you want to win by 40.
Not sure Happy Walters wanted him to be so straight forward seeing that the rookie hasn't made 1 cent in the NBA yet and this thing is in the courts. But I'll take any form of positivity that I can get at this point. This coincides with the vibe I'm getting from players as well.?

According to several players, the Knicks' captain sent out emails about the plan to all 10 players under contract for 2011-12, plus draft picks Iman Shumpert (who is already working out at IMG) and Josh Harrellson and a few free agents from the 2010-11 roster. Center Jerome Jordan signed with a team in Slovenia (with an NBA out), so he will likely not be available to attend a workout unless the lockout is resolved.

Anthony, looking muscular and well-conditioned, poured in 27 points in the Melo-Goodman game and declared himself "back". He had been dealing with an elbow injury last season.

Speaking of back, Stoudemire recently said his feels "much better."

Thx Alan Hahn

I spoke to someone last week who assured me that Shumpert blew the Knicks away during his workouts. From this video it's clear that he's working on his strength and lift and his catch and shoot ability. The shame is that he's not getting the chance to work on the timing of these essential skills because that's the biggest adjustment to the NBA off the bat in my opinion. You have to be able to recognize and read when you can get your shot then be able to knock it down.
