“In ’94 [NYR Coach Mike Keenan] figured he had a championship team he was putting together, and he needed a real quarterback for the power play,” Potvin said. “Brian Leetch was there, but he asked if I would be interested in coming back.”
Potvin was retired six years at the time.
“My immediate thought was, ‘Come on, you can’t be serious,’ but then as it turned out he was serious,” he said. “I was 42 years old at the time, and he thought that I might be able to come back in a month or two, because I stayed in pretty good shape until then. And I thought, ‘I don’t know — six years is a little ridiculous.’”
But Potvin gave it some consideration.
“At first I thought he was joking,” he said. “And then all of a sudden when I realized he was serious, I thought, ‘Oh my god, can I do this?’ So I went out skating, and I thought, ‘Nope, I can’t do this.’”
